Unfortunately, the road to true love has hit a few speed bumps, and their future together is anything but certain. Meanwhile, Brandy's ex-boyfriend Bobby DiCarlo doesn't have the same romantic woes as she does and appears to be moving on with his love life. Thankfully, Brandy, as always, has friends and family who have her back as much as she has theirs, and Brandy is one tough cookie with no plans of crumbling.

Shelly Fredman is a native Philadelphian who long dreamed to be Mrs. Illya Kuryakin from The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Having failed to reach that lofty goal, she switched her affections to fictional characters and situations that she could control with the stroke of her keyboard. This quest for power resulted in The No Such Thing As...Brandy Alexander Mysteries. Shelly and Brandy share feeling of pride in their hometown, and even though Shelly has moved to the west coast, she has always been, and forever will be, a Philly girl at heart.

Where are the Big Publishing Houses?

Before reviewing "No Such Thing As a Lost Cause", I took the time to re-read the previous four books in this excellent series by Shelly Fredman. When I review a book in a series I ask myself some basic questions: 1) Does this author follow his/her own canon? 2) Do the characters develop or are they stagnant? 3) Does the plot relate realistically to the characters? After those questions are answered, I will read the book as a "stand-alone". A good story should shine all by its self, with or without a series to back it up.
Unlike some of the more popular "Heroine Based Cozy Mysteries" such as Janet Evanovch's "Stephanie Plum" series, Fredman makes her characters reach and grow. Brandy Alexander is egocentric albeit self-debasing. She has a good heart and tries to better herself. She believes in true love and keeps finding it over and over again. Her present and by far most intriguing love interest is a dark and dangerous Nick Santiago. The reader is torn between wanting this couple to succeed and dreading the consequences if they do.
The plot of "...Lost Cause" is contemporary and poignant and involves the cruel world of dog fighting and the reality of street gangs and drug smuggling. Fredman manages to make all this work and still keep the book light enough to stay in the "cozy" genre. The story is sexy without being about sex. It is violent without displaying the violence. It reads well and leaves great visual images in your mind. It is a true example of its genre. And I highly recommend it.
When will a major publisher pick up this talented and promising author? Given the proper backing Brandy Alexander could be this generation's Nancy Drew...all grown up and knee-deep in trouble.

Loved it, loved it, loved, loved, loved it. Another outstanding entry in the Brandy Alexander books. Despite the serious topic, Shelly Fredman once again brings delightful humor through the thoughts and antics of Brandy and her friends.
The fall out from an ill-fated ride-along weighs heavily on Brandy as she deals with her new relationship with Nick, accepting a new woman in Bobby's life, and trying to win over Johnny's new guy. When she discovers a disgusting twist in the already horrendous world of dog fighting, her increased awareness of the atrocity haunts her. In typical Brandy fashion, and over the concern of her friend. she feels compelled to take action against the horror of this so called sport. While trying to determine if a man who died in a hospital was, in fact, murdered, she encounters the more problems and greater danger. After all it wouldn't be a Brandy book is someone wasn't trying to kill her.
All of our regular friends are back offering her support. You have to love these guys. This books has the usual humor but there is also a feeling that these guys are growing up, even Brandy.
If you are a fan of Brandy and her friends you will love this book. If you are new to her world, hold on and get ready for a wild ride.

I have been eagerly awaiting book 5 since I completed book four. Even going as far as joining Shelly Fredmans' FB page so as not to miss the release. The past few days waiting for Amazon to release the book has been pure torture. I'm glad to say Ms. Fredman and Brandy have not disappointed me. What a great Christmas gift! Being enmeshed in the antics of Brandy and gang. And, Nick...hmm, all I can say is yummy! The only negative thing I can say is having to wait for book six.
