Teardrop (Teardrop Trilogy Book 1), by Lauren Kate

An epic saga of heart-stopping romance, devastating secrets, and dark magic . . . a world where everything you love can be washed away. The first book in the new series from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Fallen series

Never, ever cry. . . . Eureka Boudreaux's mother drilled that rule into her daughter years ago. But now her mother is gone, and everywhere Eureka goes he is there: Ander, the tall, pale blond boy who seems to know things he shouldn't, who tells Eureka she is in grave danger, who comes closer to making her cry than anyone has before.

But Ander doesn't know Eureka's darkest secret: ever since her mother drowned in a freak accident, Eureka wishes she were dead, too. She has little left that she cares about, just her oldest friend, Brooks, and a strange inheritance—a locket, a letter, a mysterious stone, and an ancient book no one understands. The book contains a haunting tale about a girl who got her heart broken and cried an entire continent into the sea. Eureka is about to discover that the ancient tale is more than a story, that Ander might be telling the truth . . . and that her life has far darker undercurrents than she ever imagined.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Eureka Boudreaux has a unique set of problems. Not only does she have to deal with an overbearing stepmonster, senioritis, and a clueless therapist, she also has the burden of being the sole bearer of an ancient curse that could bring destruction to the entire world. A bit much? Well, add a suicide attempt to the mix along with a dash of survivor's guilt. A book in a dead language, a weird stone, and a rusted locket are all that Eureka's mother left her when she died. She must find out what they all mean, and no one can help her make sense of the mess, except the strange boy with the luminescent skin who seems to pop up whenever bad things happen. With uncommon grace, Lauren Kate manages to couple supernatural intrigue and romance with the very serious subject of suicide. Part lyrical contemporary fiction and part paranormal romance, this work bends the myth of Atlantis to fit modern experience. Narrated by Erin Spencer, this is a solid addition to any public or school library.—Shanna Miles, South Atlanta Educational Complex, GA

From Booklist
Seventeen-year-old Eureka Boudreaux survived the car accident that killed her archaeologist mother, but she is left physically and emotionally battered. Once captain of the cross-country team, she has abandoned the sport she loves and now lives with her unsympathetic stepmother, her caring but ineffectual father, and her beloved four-year-old twin stepsiblings. Eureka is also torn between new, intense feelings for two young men: childhood best friend Brooks and Ander, an attractive stranger who seems to understand her better than anyone. Upon inheriting a pendant, a handwritten book in unidentifiable language, and a mysterious stone from her mother, Eureka and friends discover her true legacy—as a descendant of Atlantis whose tears have the power to raise the lost city. In this series opener, Kate sows the seed for several more titles filled with magic, action, and romance. The Louisiana setting lends appropriately oppressive humidity to a story dominated by water in all its changing forms. Romance and mystery readers will enjoy the smooth predictability of the many plot twists, made fresh by a promising backstory and atmospheric setting. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Expect a multiplatform marketing and publicity campaign for the #1 New York Times best-selling author of the Fallen series. Grades 8-12. --Debbie Carton

A few cautions from a pre-reading parent
By Unity Dienes
I read this to preread for my 6th-grade daughter who loves romances and fantasy. First off, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I didn't find it slow at all--I read it compulsively for 2 days because I had to know what would happen next and I was picking it up every time I could. If the next book were available now I would immediately buy it and read it to know what happens next. No, it wasn't deep, but I enjoyed getting to know Eureka and her world, and it was a lot of fun to read. For older teen & adult fantasy fans, I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. I just thought it was a fun, quick read.

If anyone else is interested in getting this book for a young teen, I thought I would share some content you might be interested in knowing about (no specific spoilers). There is some gory and disturbing violence, including two gruesome murders. There is a likable character who seems very promiscuous and is described as wearing very provocative clothing and as always thinking about and looking for sex. Teenage drinking occurs at several instances, including as a party-game that is described as a highlight of senior year. The drinking is referred to several times in a positive way; it's something fun they snuck off to do and there were no particularly bad consequences. There is some intense kissing and touching of bodily areas like the scalp, back, arms, and it's pretty clear hormones are engaged and the characters want more. The book goes no further than first base. I didn't note any instances of vulgar language.

If you're looking at this one for your younger teen or tween, hopefully this helps you determine whether it would be appropriate in your situation. If you think maybe not, you might consider remembering the title for a later time--it's a good one!

Just Cry Already!
By OutlawPoet
As any California schoolchild can tell you, Eureka is the motto of the State of California. It means, "I have found it!" And it is now the most irritating character name I've read in ages. What was the author thinking??? Every time I read the name Eureka, my mind gave a little mental shout out. I have found it!

The premise of the book is rather simple. If Eureka (I have found it!) cries, the world will change in a profound and devastating way.

Some characters try to make her cry.
Some characters try to stop her from crying.
Some characters try to make her die.
Some characters try to stop her from dying.
Some readers slog through to the end.
Some readers stop halfway through.

The book is incredibly slow. The slowness is compounded by the almost immediate realization that if the girl would just cry, one could stop reading and move onto another book. Cry already!

While I'm a fan of the author, this book was almost interminable torture. I just wanted Eureka (I have found it!) to cry and end this all.

Where can you find a book that I barely finished and will most assuredly never revisit? Eureka! I have found it!
