Rooftop battles for the sake of rooftop battles

I remember when Torment came out, and they made a big deal about it being Todd McFarlane’s big bad new series – simply called Spider-Man (no “the Amazing” or “Peter Parker The Spectacular…). I bought a few copies of the first issue and sealed it away in a bag (hoping to make big bucks re-selling the big debut), and bought the new issues when they came out. I seem to remember that the story wasn’t very good – hardly anything happened.
Now, several years later, I’ve re-read it from the trade publication, and it seems that my memory served me fairly well – the story is silly, it drags on and on. The art is grotesque (McFarlane seems to have a hard time making lips look real), the configuration of the panels is endlessly, obnoxiously, compulsively creative – these are some busy pages! Mary Jane decides to go clubbing while she waits for Peter to return from being beaten up by the Lizard and Calypso, and there are clumsy attempts to establish parallels between scenes happening in two different locations (blood drips down a wall where the Lizard has killed two Wall Street bankers, then strawberry jam drips down Peter’s toast as he has breakfast with Mary Jane. Riiiiiight…
The very brief and pointless re-appearance of Kraven is probably the most interesting thing that happens in the book, and then it ends. This is what carried a story for five issues. It reminds me of Spider-Man’s Clone Saga - which came after Torment, of course - when Spider-Man was constantly being attacked by Kaine on some rooftop, but despite these epic battles the story simply didn’t move forward at all; same thing is happening here. Clumsy dialogue (“I mean, are these guys such big cement-heads?! I guess.” Mary Jane listens. …and listens.) (“Sometimes men can be really a bug”, cue bad transition). Of course, Spider-Man’s origin is re-told as well, and Calypso’s too.
Silly, over-bearing stuff – lots of bombast and freaky action, but no value.

The worst Spider-Man story ever written

Forget the marketing, this is no "classic" by any definition. In fact, it is probably the most poorly written comic book story I have ever read, and I've read thousands. Hyperbole? No, simple fact. McFarlane never became a great writer--he's always publicly downplayed the importance of writers in comics on the grounds that the art is all that really matters--but in this, his first big project, he is clearly in way over his head.
The plot actually isn't badly conceived. "Torment" is a semi-sequel to "Kraven's Last Hunt", widely regarded as one of the best Spider-Man sagas yet published, and as such brings in Kraven's old girlfriend, Calypso, who plans to use the Lizard as an agent of vengeance against Spider-Man. It's a pretty good idea, but McFarlane should have been willing to give up the ball and let a real writer take up the script, and if he didn't want to his editor should have made him. "Torment" is almost unbelievably badly written. McFarlane's attempts at narrative are repetitive and awkward, and his dialogue is even worse--downright painful, in fact. McFarlane has no idea how to establish tone, how to make his characters talk to each other, or even when to say nothing at all. Moreover, he drags the story out over what were originally five agonizing issues, so that a story that could have been wrapped up in two chapters goes on interminably. Despite the prodigious length of "Torment," not much really happens, and the conclusion is a frustrating anti-climax. The story's only saving grace is, naturally, the artwork, but it's not nearly good enough to salvage McFarlane's would-be opus.
Amazingly, "Torment" was a big seller which solidified McFarlane's pre-eminent stature at the time of its original publication. How such a poorly written story became so popular is truly beyond this reviewer's comprehension. No matter how big of a Spider-Man fan you are, you do not need to spend your hard-earned cash on this book. Yes, it really is that bad.

This 1990s series of Spidey stories by Rob Liefeld & Todd McFarlane breathed new life into the webslinger. Fanboys of Marvel's favorite webhead will enjoy this book. It brings back great memories of my early years of comic book collecting.
