The Last Swordmage: The Swordmage Trilogy: Book 1 (Magic of Solendrea), by Martin Hengst

Read the 1st book of the Magic of Solendrea series.

As far as bad luck goes, Tiadaria’s has been the stuff of legend. After being sold into slavery by her father and accused of a murder she didn’t commit, she finds herself facing the executioner. The only thing standing between her neck and the sharp edge of the axe is the village Constable.

After thirty years of loyal service to the Imperium, Royce has retired to King’s Reach as the village’s Constable. He thought that the frontier town would be the perfect place to rest, relax, and die in peace. He was wrong. With a crooked Magistrate on one hand and a conniving slaver on the other, things are anything but peaceful. To complicate his life even further, the slave with her neck on the block seems to possess the same magic Royce has hidden all his life.

Paying off Tiadaria’s bond, Royce takes possession of a slave in a land where slavery is verboten. Now he must teach her to trust him, teach her to fight, and teach her about her unique abilities before they both run out of time. An ancient menace is coming. The Xarundi have returned. They are the most dangerous enemy humanity has ever faced, and they have a thousand years of bloodthirsty vengeance to exact.

Review
"As you read this you can't help but but get pulled in, you get attached to the character and when you put the book down it just tugs at you to find out what happens next." ~ Jourdon Wucik

"The book was intense and exciting and I couldn't put it down until I was finished, and then I found myself saying I want more!" ~ Janell F. Adair
"This series is wonderfully fresh. While we still have all the elements of mystery, magic, fear and mistrust, the story is so compelling. From the first chapter we are engaged in the personal battles of Tia's life where she is sold to slavery by her father. The journey she takes and the harshness she encounters builds compassion as a reader and pulls us into the book completely." ~ CG
"Well developed characters that are defined throughout the trilogy. The heroine's immaturity at the beginning gets rounded out by experience, mentors and teachers. She is refined like a great blade in the fires of battle and hard knocks. The story is well written and leaves you wanting to read the next installment in the series. I would highly recommend the fast paced, quick read to anyone interested in a blend of magic and swordplay." ~ William D. Osborne

About the Author
I write the same type of books I love to read: tales of science fiction and fantasy where anything can, and frequently does, happen. There's nothing better than a rollicking good adventure and my number one priority as a writer is to be an amazing travelling companion for those intrepid explorers who pick up any of my books.

I live in South Central Pennsylvania with my wife and two children. When I'm not working on my next book or story, I enjoy music, reading, and playing games.

I really like hearing from people who have enjoyed my books. Please don't hesitate to connect with me on Twitter or Facebook. For the latest news and information about me and my books, check out my website at: martinfhengst.com.

I was excited about a female lead until...
By C. Francis
There is so much in here that is very problematic that I will not be reading any more of this series.

1-Tia, the main character is sexual assaulted in the first scene, and continually threatened with sexual assault. And even after all her training, when traveling she thinks her mentor is about to rape her, and she does not even consider fighting back.
2-The only women we meet are (or have been) slaves. We do not meet any other women.

The plot and timing is a whole different problem. Months seem to sneak past will little indication. The party travels to the city to give a report on disturbing massacres in the woods, and next thing you know, there's a major battle in the city, and then the whole war is over in a flash.

Bad Characters
By Amazon Customer
I bought this based on reviews that said it was like the muirwood books. It is not at all. The characters have no depth and the plot has no detail. It was terribly written. It is also offensives to women and has the main character telling her master he can rape her because she owes it to him. It just came off as a badly written male fantasy.

Solid, Quick Read Fantasy
By Rick
This was a solid, reasonably quick read 250 page book (I read it cover to cover in 4 hours); it's solid fantasy with a good story arc. The descriptions are short and direct - with focus on moving the story along swiftly. This is at odds with some current popular fantasy novels which focus of pages on flowery description and world-building (I prefer a happy medium - i think its hard to get engrossed in a story in only 250 pages). I would probably give this 3.5 stars if I could use half stars.

Its a good read, and I enjoyed it. The main character (Tia) is a strong lead, who develops admirably throughout the novel, and provides a good set-up for book 2. She is trained and develops skills in her "sword-mage" talent (a mix of warrior and magic). There are no detailed descriptions of the magic base here. Rather, we see what Tia (and Royce) are capable of and get brief glimpses of how Tia thinks.

Overall, this is a good, fun, quick read. Its not a book I will likely ever read again, nor one I will remember past next week. In order to give you an insight into my style, I loved Enders Game, Game of Thrones, and The Wheel of Time. I just finished The book Of Deacon (better then this, 4 stars for creativity and magic development), and The Magicians (much more detailed, great world building, 4 stars).
