"We have met the enemy, and they are ours"

"Oliver Hazard Perry: The Hero of Lake Erie" is a short bio on the life of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry which can be read in one sitting. It is well written and informative. I learned a great deal, especially on Perry's early life. I wrote a fictionalized account of Perry's exploits during the Battle of Lake Erie, and I wish I had the opportunity to consult this work in my research beforehand. Unfortunately, "Oliver Hazard Perry" was published four months too late. I look forward to reading more of McCoy's "In Your Hand" digital history series.

A Helpful Addition to Other Books on Perry.

Although the book was brief, I did learn more about Perry's family history and Perry's influential experience before he went to Erie.
What was especially interesting was the quote from Harm Huidekoper. The activities of the Huidekoper family that settled in our Meadville area has always been of special interest, and I would also rely on Huidekoper's assessment of "young Perry".

Much more specific than the original

I read the original 5/3/1 (1st edition) a while back (about a year ago?), and I liked the program and have been loosely using it since. I finally found out that there was a new edition just for powerlifters, and I am glad I picked it up. Unlike the original, it contains information specific to geared lifters (but it is not entirely for geared lifters). It also had some useful recommendations regarding how to modify the program to fit your needs and how far out from a meet you are. Where the original contained a lot of things that any powerlifter should already know (like how to perform basic lifts), this edition replaces it with information that is of special interest to a powerlifter. While this book makes references to the original, the references are explained enough that this one can stand on its own just fine. Like the original, it makes for easy, short reading. If your interest is the sport of powerlifting, you can skip the original and just buy this one. Personally, I got more value out of it then I did the original.

Good information, lousy book

I have seen people complain that Jim Wendler's books are too expensive for what they contain, but I have to disagree with this assessment. His programs are well-recognized, have thousands of success stories behind them, and are simple enough for any lifter to follow. Hell, there's even a free app to track 5/3/1 training. So the information in the books is generally well worth the price. This book is no exception. He spends very little time outlining the basics of the program, instead focusing on the modifications and specific concerns of the powerlifter versus people training for any other reason. Gear concerns, tapering a program for meet preparation, and other concerns specific to the powerlifter's goals are the focus of this book.
Now, for the negative. I am pretty sure that no one edited this book at all. There are not only basic misspellings rampant throughout the book, but there are also numerous places where random symbols are inserted in the middle of a line. It looks as though it was composed in one format, then copy/pasted into a document in another format, and some kind of translation incompatibility replaced a lot of punctuation with other inappropriate symbols. At times, it actually makes comprehension of a sentence pretty difficult, but generally speaking, it is little more than an annoyance. How much of an annoyance is up to you entirely, but to me it reeks of amateurism.

This book gives a great overview of the original 5/3/1 program and then shows ways to tailor it if you want to improve your powerlifting. The 5/3/1 program has been incredibly effective for me. I bought this book to get more ideas. It was worth the money. I will incorporate some of the ideas when I start my next 5/3/1 cycle.

If they are older and haven't started to learn sight words, just start them on section 1. If they are experiencing success with the words, don't be afraid to advance them to the higher levels. The sooner they know these sight words the better.

As a bonus I have added themed sight words. They are not Dolche words, but commonly used words grouped together, e.g. family, objects, colors, numbers, verbs, describing words, pronouns etc. Not only will these words help your child with their reading, but they will expand their vocabulary as well.

I loved this book! Sunny's group of friends -- especially Edna -- are a hoot! Jake is oh-so-sexy and you're rooting for him and Sunny to end up together. If you're looking for a great book about friends, this is it. Ms. Marts debut is a Must Have!

Friends and Foe

Sunny's quest to find love and a life with more adventure is easy to relate to. Antics with her friends are hilarous. The mystery of a missing neighbor and stalker keep the pages turning in between the laughs.

Read only if you want to laugh...

This book is truly laugh-out-loud funny. The scene where she's going on her first blind date and gets in the car? Hilarious! I read a lot, but this book contains several turns of phrase I'd never heard. I loved the characters in general, but I especially enjoyed the friendships between the women. They are genuine and real. I hope the author continues to explore these friendships in other books, because there are more stories to be told.

UPDATE: I read this book last year and loved it. I just reread it for the first time and although I remembered and looked forward to some of the best scenes, I had forgotten a lot of really funny scenes and lines. More laughs as I read, and I found myself with a big smile on my face more than once. I love a book you can read and enjoy more than once!
