A living picture of Paul. Historical, insightful, in depth.

From the first paragraph of their introduction: "The purpose of this work is to give a living picture of St. Paul himself, and of the circumstances by which he was surrounded." Actually, they did far more than that modest sentence indicates. Either Conybeare or Howson (or both of them) personally walked and sailed everywhere that the Apostle traveled! Their account is a great travelogue, an historical tour-de-force, and an insightful Christian analysis and examination of Paul's ministry. Included in the book are the authors' own translations from the Greek of Paul's inspired writings!

Tough, but good

This work was written in the 19th century, so the language can be challenging. This is not casual reading. That being said, I have found it to be one of the best biographies of Paul. So many of the others seem really to be the author's projections of some point of view they hold onto the apostle Paul. The authors at times run off into speculation, but these are clearly marked. I am sure it is dated with respect to the archeology of the middle east and Greece.

A superb book!

This outstanding book captivated me from beginning to end.

In fact, it is not an easy read. I needed far more than a dictionary to see me through it, and even then, I could not figure out some of (what I thought) were its more obscure/dated references. Biblical atlases, regular atlases, and encyclopedias, as well as other reference books, were stacked by my side as I slogged through it. But it was worth every moment!

These two can write! The book is thorough, the notes are excellent, and I never felt like these two had an agenda, which is something I value when I read books.

I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get to know St Paul for themselves.

Fire and Sword of Rudolf Slatin gives living images, detailed descriptive and interesting narrative of Sudan and Sudanese conditions in the late 19th century . This book is a personal narrative and reflection of Rudolf Slatin life in Sudan as a young man in his early twenties appointed as the governor of the vast region of Darfur.The young Austrian soldier was later surrounded to save his life to the leader of the Mahadists armed revolution that swapped Sudan in 1885.
Slatin even went further to show loyalty to his captives by pretending to be a Muslim and present himself as one of the Caliphat Al Mahadi loyal servants. For more than 12 years Slatin lived through the 19 century militant and militarized Mahadists regime, largely mirroring the current Islamic militants regimes like Boko Haram or Elshbab of Somalia. Although in his book Slatin consistently reflected his undermining and disrespect for the men who controlled his life for 12 years or more. His narrative presented a strong images and interesting details of the dynamic of the relationships between colonialists and their colonial nations. The the book gives fascinating description about the process of the Mahadists nation wide revolt against of the Turkish-Egyptian ruling and their European allies in Sudan. Slatin as a trained military man gives descriptions of the 19 century brutal battles.

Reading this book and being Sudanese myself seems as if time traveled backwards and Sudan's was never able to overcome that particular moment of the Mahadist militant and militarized regime. Slatin despite his own conflicting, arrogant views of Sudanese people interactions and living, his book some how and interesting enough reflected on the strong ties that connect the hybrid nations of Sudan and some how unites their destiny. I got a refund. After the first 50 or so pages the book skipped to page 365. I talked with technical support and they agreed that there was an error in publishing the book on line.

I just ordered the book. So far the main complaint I have is that there is no way to go to the Table of Contents.. that is in the Kindle version. for me this is a major draw back.

Waste of Time.... ironically

Ironic that an Extreme Time Management book would be such a wast of time. The 30 hours he advertises comes from the fact that he assumes that everyone reading this book spends ~5-6 hours a day watching tv. His solution: stop watching tv and all of a sudden you have an extra 30 hours a week to work on everything else. Since i don't watch much tv, that was absolutely worthless. The rest of the book is spent giving you tips on how to live a better life. The summary: get rid of negative people in your life and simplify your life by getting rid of unnecessary material things, outsource things you don't like to do, find another source of income, shop and cook in bulk..

He does have a few worth while things to say. For example, he encourages readers to make plans for a better life, but more importantly to take action toward those plans. My problem with his message - other than it has very little to do gaining hours in a week- is that he assumes that everyone in your life is a conceded greedy jerk that will lie to you at every point, won't support you, will kick you when you're down, and then envy you if you succeed.

A significant part of the book was him describing how he became a millionaire. Nothing too exciting, he stopped working and found a second source of income by creating an online business. The details are vague: he made a page that sold someone else's product and wrote a book, but then he was a millionaire. It would have been best if mentioned it a couple of times and let it go, but i felt like he felt the need to remind me was a millionaire every couple of pages. He also spent an ever larger amount of time describing his day: wake up when he wants to, works out, reads a book, writes a book, hangs out with friends. That was worth reading once, maybe up to tree times, but anything after that is just unnecessary. He will remind you of his perfect day, in detail, until the last page of the book, whether or not it's relevant to mention.

Honestly, the book isn't that bad. I might give the information in it a 3/5 in the category of encouraging people to be active and change their lives for the better. However, the guy has a terrible writing style. He is writing a book on time management but doesn't really tell you how to manage your time in the life you currently own - other than than to say "stop wasting your time". For every sentence worth reading there were a few paragraphs of fluff in which he attempted to prove how his point was right.. or repeat himself. By the way, if you know anything about correlation you will be grinding your teeth at the huge flaws in logic he claims are proofs.

Overall, I felt preached at by a guy who doesn't respect the people around him, telling me what to do to be as awesome as him.. No thanks.

A book thats worth every penny!

This is the perfect book to learn the skills and techniques needed to work with polymer clay.

There are so few books on the market today for beginners and all the books I have seen presume that the reader understands how to make things such as millefiori canes and skinner blends. I had no idea what these things were before I read this book. This is the only book I have found which takes the reader through each stage step by step and with easy to understand pictures and instructions.

Thank you Sue for your fabulously fun book! Please hurry up and write another!

Great ebook introduction into millefiori

This is the first ebook i've bought for my ipad and i was really pleased!
I'm only just starting with Polymer clay and wanted a quick to read starter guide for doing some canes. The book is really clearly laid out with good photos and you get a lot of instructions and handy tips without having to wade through unneccesary text.
As its called book 1, hopefully there are more beginner books to follow.

From the Inside Flap
Every evening after dinner, the young women settled in the sitting room. Reece enjoyed the soothing environment, and it usually helped her unwind from a long day with her companions. The weather had begun to cool, and so each evening Reece sat in a comfortable chair between the windows and the fire, curled up with a blanket, and found her serenity. On her lap, she usually had a book from the Palace's library, while the young women generally spent their evenings flipping through pages of various books on fashion.
Reece was perfectly content. She allowed her mind to drift from her book to gaze out the windows before her. Relaxed and comfortable, she closed the book and settled further into the chair.
Giggling and laughter brought her attention to the sofa where the three women were lounging in front of the fireplace. She smiled at their bond. Their personalities might not match hers, but they seemed very close. She found herself missing her friends back home. She faintly smiled, and then returned her gaze to the window, watching the moonlight sparkle in the grass and waters below it.
"Reece? Reece, I must know this instant what it is that you are staring at!" Simone demanded in her soprano voice.
Reece snapped out of her relaxed state and looked up to find Simone coming toward her. "Every night that we have come in here, you end up sitting here, reading one of our books. And now, here you are staring out of the windows...at what? Absolutely nothing!"
Reece sat up in her chair, slightly stunned. "I didn't know that what I do, or don't do, with my time concerned you so much, Simone. I'm flattered that you've taken the time to question what I'm doing." She smiled gently and waited for an answer.
"I'll take that as a compliment," Simone said as she brushed the hair lying on her shoulder to her back. "I simply find it amazing that one would consume her time gazing out of a window into darkness after hearing the news that in only two more days, a certain family is to return to the Palace." She winked at Reece, and Reece stared at her in confusion.
Simone laughed her usual high-pitched trill, which would have been contagious had there been no malice behind it. "We all know Levi and Harrison will return with them. I will admit that it has been rather...well...rather boring and dull without them around, wouldn't you?" She cocked a brow and giggled.
Oh, please. Here we go...the Levi and Harrison thing again, Reece thought once she understood what Simone was trying to imply. "Are you asking me if I find it boring around here without two men I hardly know?"
Simone took a chair opposite Reece, blocking the window. She cleared her throat, as if preparing to lecture her. "Don't you find it stimulating to hear of their return? Why, I've never met a woman who wouldn't be excited about the return of two exceptionally handsome men. After all, I'm sure you know they will be giving you their undivided attention."
Lillian stood and came over to the conversation. In the last few days, Lillian and Catherine had both seemed to change their attitudes toward Reece. They weren't friendly, but their insulting comments had ceased and they no longer seemed disgusted by her presence. Now, Lillian looked questioningly at Simone, but her friend willfully ignored her, pursuing an agenda that Reece was unsure about.
"I have no idea what you are trying to imply," she stated as she set her book aside. "I have put up with your rudeness long enough, and therefore I'm not going to answer your ridiculous question."
She stood up. Simone also stood and used her tall, slender figure to tower over Reece. Her face flushed with rage as she squeezed her lips into a fine line. For the first time since she met her, Reece found no beauty in the woman.
Then Simone smiled, with what seemed to be a great effort of will, and her features softened. "Reece, I was speaking in jest, trying to lighten the evening."
Reece didn't say anything.
"You did not think I was accusing you of anything?" Simone said, almost crooning the words.
Reece looked at her in disbelief.
"I hope I have not upset you, Reece. We've enjoyed entertaining you for this past week or so." She giggled--a combination of amusement, malice, and perhaps a touch of nerves.
"Entertaining me? Well, I guess that would be one way to put it. And I have been entertained--or at least educated--by your pathetic spite. I've spent these last few days listening to your ignorant contempt of me and my home. I think that if I hear the words 'our beautiful Pemdas' one more time, I'll lose my mind. You have done nothing but treat me like a desperate fool from some other miserable land. Then you insult me further by insinuating that I would sit here and daydream of your men?"
Simone was expressionless while Reece finished, "I've had all I can take. It's a big palace; I don't have to stay here with you women." She turned to leave, and then stopped, looking back to find all three women staring at her in shock. "Don't forget, I didn't choose to come to here. I was kidnapped and forced to live here by your marvelous Pemdas warriors, who are interested in Earth only as it serves to keep 'your beautiful Pemdas' safe. Believe me when I say I would far rather be home with my friends."
It was Simone who made the first effort and walked toward Reece. She laid a hand gently on Reece's arm. Reece shook the hand off with a shudder, as if it were a spider.
"Reece," said Lillian, "I'm sorry. Simone has finally crossed a line, and she knows better. Please, don't leave; we've truly enjoyed your company."
Reece stared into Lillian's eyes. What a coward. She was afraid Reece would tell the Empress. "Allow me to make this perfectly clear: I don't need anyone's sympathy, especially any of yours." Her tone was smooth and deadly. "I'm glad you enjoy my company. I, on the other hand, have had better conversations with the silversmith in the village than I've had with any of you. Fine clothes obviously don't make either fine manners or interesting minds."
Simone's eyes narrowed while Reece continued. "Your idea of keeping someone company seems to be a mixture of ill-will and showing off, but without the courage to do either one openly. You've pretended to befriend me while stifling laughter whenever I speak and belittling my home from morning until night. Why? Because you're all too self-absorbed to make the effort to know someone new or learn about a different place. Then you feign astonishment about having alienated me! Well, I thank you for showing me what your 'lovely land' of Pemdas is really like."
Reece nodded formally. "Ladies, I bid you goodnight."

Good debut

I would give The Legacy of the Key a 3.5. As far as debut novels go, it was pretty good. It's a weird combo of contemporary but historical at the same time (you'll see) and sci-fi, if that makes any sense, and it actually works.

I loved the world building in this. The author creates an alternate dimension called Pemdas and I really liked the way she makes it come alive with vivid, detailed descriptions, I could almost see it before my eyes. Great imagination.

Reece was a good heroine. She's smart and she can hold her own, she doesn't let anyone put her down. I was waiting for her to become a weak damsel in distress, but it never really happens, she doesn't need saving and she pretty much deals with everything thrown her way. I liked the way she handled the girls in the palace. At the same time, she's a typical girl, swooning over pretty boys, loving big bathrooms, grooming products and big closets.

Levi (love that name!) was a good hero - none of that possessive, controlling stuff we so often see in romance these days. He also had that air of nobility about him, but it definitely doesn't define him and he's just a normal, good guy. I must say that I really liked him, he was just the right amount of cocky, even though at times he was too sappy for my liking.

I thought Reece had better chemistry with Harrison than Levi. It's not really a love triangle although I expected it to be, the blurb definitely implies it. Yes, the romance is very sweet, but maybe a little too perfect and a tad cheesy. It's a slow build up to them admitting to their feelings, and I liked how subtle it was.

While I generally liked the writing, I'd say it still reads like a debut novel - the author barely ever uses contractions, even in dialogue, which just seemed completely unnatural. At first I thought maybe it's just the Pemdai that talk like that, but no, the heroine does as well. And there is an abundance of improper use of commas (punctuation in general, but commas especially) - it messes up the flow of the story. I was constantly making pauses in my head wherever a comma was even though I knew I shouldn't, and it took me longer than it normally would to read a book this long.
That being said, I loved the characters and the plot. I must admit, I was really surprised at where the story went. I didn't expect it. All the people in the palace - the spiteful trio (I always think that if I want to slap someone from a book, it's a good character), and the lovely Elisabeth, the Emperor and Empress, Jasmeen and my favorite, Harrison, they were great and they all add something to the story. It was a little slow at times, but seeing as the author took her time to introduce you to Pemdas and all the back story it made sense. It was really interesting so I wasn't bored.

It's a very clean read, for those who care about those things.

Overall, if you want to read a light story set in a different dimension with a sweet love story and a bit of a thrill at the right times, I definitely recommend it. It's a good escapist read because it takes you to a whole different world and makes you want to visit Pemdas yourself. The story ties up nicely in the end, but at the same time the author creates a good introduction for the sequel. Will I read the next book? I think I probably will. I kind of want to know what else is out there, you know?

Excellent Read!! What a wonderful escape!

I don't ever write reviews, but I really felt led to for this particular book.
I'm an avid reader who loves to read books that I can get lost in. I love books
that can take me away into a wonderful escape. This Author created a unique and
intriguing world that did just that! I'm still baffled by her imagination and
creativity. And more than that her ability to interweave the super natural with
the 17th century time period. WOW!

Her characters are brilliant! The main female character's dialogue had me
laughing out loud throughout the book. I really like all of her characters and their fun witty exchanges.
All in all, this story is remarkable. It draws you in from the first chapter, and
keep you turning pages to find out where it's all going.

I will be recommending this book to my friends and family. I'm ready for
the next book and many more to come.

Charming clean & cute

A very charming love story that any girl would love. The main character Reese is a smart contradiction of free spirit & insecurities of a young adult. Her male romantic counterpart is the epitome of the classic gentlemen & young love. The explanation of the different worlds were substantial enough for me to be believable w/o being over kill. The author gives the new world a vivid narrative. Sometimes I'm left w/ questions & w/ the feeling I'm "reading" about a fantastical place but I came away feeling that this other dimension could very well exist. This books has a sequel but it sum's up most things pretty good that I didn't feel it was a "cliffhanger" or teaser but that it was a completed book. I'm glad I downloaded this book & took a chance on a new author. I also am VERY glad it was clean & could have left my 12 yr old read it but still had enough substance that it intrigued a 12 yr olds momma! I recommend this book highly!
