a good look at the history of history

This book was written in 1908 by a Harvard history professor, who's intro includes thanks to some schoolteachers (women, of course!) for their input. It was probably well received in 1908, because its well organized, written in short and easy to understand sentences and paragraphs, and is as comprehensive as you can expect in a book written for middle school or high school students.
HOWEVER... it includes all the prejudice of the time... so, if you want to get a clearer picture on how history was viewed in 1908 by a man who's views were pretty respected by educators across the country, this is your book. It is for this reason that I loved it. Actually, only liked it... the illustrations are not there! There are little captions under boxes that tell you what the picture would have been, and sometimes there is just a box so you know there should have been one, but I would have loved to have the illustrations with the text.
Now, back to Channing, who does not completely overlook how badly the Native Americans were treated by European conquerors, but the references are small. He mentions that some Spanish sailors "stole Indians and carried them to the islands to work as slaves". His next comment, though, is that Cortez "conquered Mexico after a thrilling campaign". No mention of the vast and wonderful culture that was destroyed... He seems to feel sorry for deSoto because the "Indians" gave him "a dreadful time". Sir John Hawkins, of England, sailed to America for Queen Elizabeth, "carried cargoes of negro slaves from Africa to the West Indies and sold them to the Spanish planters." Several times Channing refers to the Indians as "savages", which is what I was taught was basically a synonym for Native American when I was a small child. I am glad that I lived to see the thrust of truth on history. I found it interesting that Channing declares that many of the Scrooby people "preferred to go prison in England rather than lead such a life of slavery in Holland." My own research indicates that the Scrooby Puritans didn't fare so well economically in Holland, and they really didn't like that their children were exposed to other ways of life by their Dutch neighbors, but Holland did not by any means enslave the Puritans.
There are many really interesting glimpses into the paradigm of the day, but a few are too cool to not mention... In discussing the Wilmot Proviso (1846) Channing says, "...Texas must be a slave state. Most people were agreed that Oregon should be free soil. For it was too far north for negroes to thrive." He thought black people need warm weather, apparently. I almost laughed out loud.
There is still a bit of political correctness that keeps modern history books from being specific about the "whole" truth... this book charges right on about Stephens (vice president of the Confederacy) statement that "foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man." Modern texts rarely mention that the great abolitionists were loathe to fight FOR the negro, and Channing goes right ahead and reminds us that the great abolitionist Greeley thought the south had the moral right to form its own nation based on slavery.
Channing also glorifies the exploits of this country in its colonization and conquering of Puerto Rico, the Phillipines, etc. Of course, he was writing a mere 15 years and less after our expansion into these areas, and did not have the passage of time to clarify vision...
Organization is one of this books shining triumphs. It is much better organized than many of the textbooks currently in use in middle and high schools.
You might also be aware that you'll need to know some archaic names for places... He talks about Columbus believing it was only 3000 miles to Cipango, but if you don't know that Cipango was what Marco Polo called Japan, it might not mean much. There are other such references, and some political movements have also been renamed over the years, so a passing general knowledge of American History might be a good idea before reading this.
But, as maybe you can tell, I love history, and I enjoyed this historical look at the study of history....
