Fascinating culinary history

This is a classic early American cookbook. As such, don't plan on easily making any of these recipes. First of all, our foods have changed, as well as our lifestyles. So have our cooking methods and equipment. Few of us have servants or slaves, wood fired stoves, or cooking hearths. We don't do our own butchering either.

This isn't a cookbook to use, but rather one to read, to realize how far we have come from the antebellum period to modern cooking. It's history, seen through the foods that fuel us and how they were prepared. It's a great source for doing reenactments. It's an excellent resource when studying the antebellum period as well.

For me, it's also entertaining. I remember some of the cooking my grandmother did, and this fills in some of the blanks too. If you have any interest in minimal processing, this can also help in those areas.

It's definitely worth reading, and in the Kindle format, it doesn't even take up bookshelf space. It's great when you only have a short time to read, as a few recipes or a single chapter can be interesting on its own.

Breezy but informative glimpse of domestic life in early America from the highly readable Mary Randolph. Not only a celebrated historical cookbook and housekeeping reference, but an interesting first-person account of the long-forgotten ways of doing things, from baking a cake to mixing your own furniture stripper. The book is better as inspiration and historical document than instruction manual.

The Sluagh Comes a Calling

I just finished reading "Soul Thief," and I can't get the image of the sluagh out of my mind. Seriously -- it's that horrific. I'm reminded of Lovecraft's monsters that are so awful the human mind can't quite grasp them, which leads to a special brand of madness. Not that I'm headed that direction (yet), but I might need to read something else (maybe Tales of Woe and Wonder) to get my head straight! A well-written story by a fine author of dark, Grimm-style fairy tales.

what kind of a creature is this?

This is a very good story. I just absolutely did not like the monster. yuck. I did not like the sister either, or the father. The mother was kind of hopeless, too. The cat was fine, and so was the boy who tells the story from his perspective.

I think the monster will be lurking in the corners of my nightmares for quite some time. ... I have never even heard of these. ugh.

Keach, Rev. Benjamin, was born in Stokehaman, England, Feb. 29, 1640. He found peace through Christ in his fifteenth year; and being unable to discover infant baptism or baptism by sprinkling in the Bible, and being fully satisfied that every believer should be immersed, he was baptized after the Savior’s example by John Russell, and united with a neighboring Baptist church. This community, perceiving his remarkable talents, encouraged him, when he was eighteen years old, to exercise his gifts as a minister.
At first he was an Arminian about the extent of the atonement and free will, but the reading of the Scriptures and the conversation of those who knew the will of God more perfectly relieved him from both errors. In 1668, in the twentyeighth year of his age, he was ordained pastor of the church of Horsleydown, Southward, London. The congregation increased so rapidly after Mr. Keach became pastor, that they had repeatedly to enlarge their house of worship.
Mr. Keach soon became a famous disputant on the Baptist side; he had taken Richard Baxter in hand, to the serious injury of the bishop of Kidderminster, and others had felt his heavy blows.
