Ok, I'm not going to be complicated with my review, but I actually have two ratings for this story, 4 stars and 3 1/2 stars. I actually like this story and what the author did between Jackson and Ava. Concepts with lost love or crushes, always set my inner juices flowing. Jackson's feelings, emotions and vulnerability was what made me attracted to me throughout the story. And although he got Ava to agree to a week of leaving all control to him, seeing him woo her to open her eyes to what is in front of her was also nice. Ava had an unresolved past that she is dealing with when it comes to her family. She is attracted to the life style of Dom and sub, but since her first experience with Jackson, she has never forgotten him or ventured out to experience it fully because of her unresolved emotions. I felt for me personally, I wasn't as excited in the beginning as I wanted to be, however, this was a book that got better as the story progressed and we see what is transpiring between Ava and Jackson within their one week agreement. Also, two words, one meaning, Red Velvet and it means sex whenever wherever. I was excited about the access word used between Ava and Jackson as for me it was a reversal spin on a safe word. I wanted Jackson to use it more often, because it was fun but short lived, but nevertheless, fun.

Why I gave it 4**** stars:
If this was an entity by itself and not a series, I liked this story. It felt like a love story of a man who is desperately seeking the love of this woman, Ava, still, after ten years. Throw in the spicy sex scenes and backgrounds, it was fun.

Why I would give it 3 1/2**** stars:
As much as I liked the story, it didn't feel like a Club Volare series, it felt like a distant cousin of the series. Even though the story started out in Club Volare, I felt the club aspect of the series got lost a bit. In Sold to the Sheikh (BDSM Erotic Romance) (Club Volare), I remember reading the first chapter and the allure of the club and what was going on behind the scenes, it seemed forbidden but yet exciting and I wanted that feeling again. Of course, I know all the scenes wouldn't take place in Club Volare, but I would have been nice to see a little naughtiness within the club, just saying. The BDSM aspect is there but comes out a little more within certain scenes. Also, Jackson, I love him but sometimes I wanted him to put the wooing to the side and give me some Dom power. For me, is Dom persona felt more like a teasing, but he was still Dominate sometimes. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book, would recommend the series and still look forward to book three.

I was sucked in by that first chapter--hot, mysterious stranger wanting to own her for a week. . .feeling her up against the high rise glass above the city--this had the making of a great BDSM read--I couldn't wait to get this . . I started losing interest when Jackson ties Ava between two trees above the skating rink, makes her walk naked to the roof of his building with a device hanging out of her ass and then has anal sex while she's elevated by rope dangling over the roof of a building... the devices took longer to explain than the sex acts themselves. I like Chloe Cox books, but couldn't picture myself as Ava, as I have a terrible fear of heights and cold weather. Liked Sold to the Sheikh, much better--

I enjoyed the Masters of Shadowlands series by Cherise Sinclair so I was hoping these books would be just as good. Unfortunately, they are not. They're a decent read, but I don't feel the writing or character development is as good as Cherise Sinclairs.

An honest portayal of the life if the "Plain People"

Slow down and savour each page of this gem... "We are not Amish, we are Christians. Amish is just a nickname. We don't need to be ashamed that people call us that but we shouldn't build on the Amish name." William A. Yoder
This quote from the book sticks most in my mind after reading this collection of first-hand accounts of Amish life, gathered from personal and family documents by the Amish people themselves, dating from the 1700's to the present day.
This is their story, told their way. I found that most refreshing.
An honest portrayal of a community of people struggling to maintain the purity of their faith and love for their fellow man in a world that seems set to undermine everything they stand for. Rightly called a "Treasury", and presenting both the joys and the hardships of the Amish way of life, this book was hard to put down, and left me aching for a time when the world and the way we lived in it was much simpler fare.....

Great introduction to Amish life

John Hostetler is a recognized authority in Amish history and culture in particular and the Plain People in general. Having read much of what he has written himself, I was interested in reading "Amish Roots," a book in which he lets the Amish tell their story in their own words. I was not disappointed. Although it does not have the cohesiveness and unifying theme of a single-author text, it makes the Amish come alive in a very practical way. Most of these vignettes are one or two pages long, and they cover a wide range of topics. The essays are categorized as follows: The European connection, Coming to America, Pioneering in the American West, Agriculture and everyday life, Church and community government, Home and family, Phases of life, Amish schools, School management, Conscience in conflict, Interaction with outsiders, Joining and leaving the faith, Controversies and disputes, Memorabilia, Legends, Misfortunes, Malicious attacks, Criticisms, Speaking out, Tributes. Each of these categories contains anywhere from 5-14 essays by a variety of Amish authors. The book includes a collection of full-page colored plates by several Amish artists.

Reading this book will give a person a greater appreciation of these fascinating and often misunderstood people.

Stands Out Amongst Other Books

Excellent book, reflective of Amish values. Simple in all the best ways, it would appeal to people who read Wendell Berry, William Woyes Weaver, or comparable authors. I do not care for Amish romances or fiction books in the "Christian" genre, but this was enjoyable and reminded me of stories that my Great- Grandparents would tell. Fascinating for anyone who wants a sociologically- accurate portrayal of Amish life. When the book arrived in the mail, I was occupied for hours!

Passion and the outsider

It was a glittering, sumptuous time when hypocrisy was expected, discreet infidelity tolerated, and unconventionality ostracized.

That is the Gilded Age, and nobody knew its hypocrises better than Edith Wharton.... and nobody portrayed them as well. "The Age of Innocence" is a trip back in time to the stuffy upper crust of "old New York," taking us through one respectable man's hopeless love affair with a beautiful woman -- and the life he isn't brave enough to have.

Newland Archer, of a wealthy old New York family, has become engaged to pretty, naive May Welland. But as he tries to get their wedding date moved up, he becomes acquainted with May's exotic cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, who has returned home after dumping her cheating husband. At first, the two are just friends, but Newland becomes more and more entranced by the Countess' easy, free-spirited European charm.

After Newland marries May, the attraction to the mysterious Countess and her free, unconventional life becomes even stronger. He starts to rebel in little ways, but he's still mired in a 100% conventional marriage, job and life. Will he become an outcast and go away with the beautiful countess, or will he stick with May and the safe, dull life that he has condemned in others?

There's nothing too scandalous about "Age of Innocence" in a time when starlets acquire and discard boyfriends and husbands like old pantyhose -- it probably wasn't in the 1920s when it was first published. But then, this isn't a book about sexiness and steam -- it's part bittersweet romance, part social satire, and a look at what happens when human beings lose all spontaneity and passion.

Part of this is due to Wharton's portrayal of New York in the 1870s -- opulent, cultured, pleasant, yet so tied up in tradition that few people in it are able to really open up and live. It's a haze of ballrooms, gardens, engagements, and careful social rituals that absolutely MUST be followed, even if they have no meaning. It's a place "where the real thing was never said or done or even thought."

And Wharton writes distant, slightly mocking prose that outlines this sheltered little society. Her writing opens as slowly and beautifully as a rosebud, letting subtle subplots and powerful, hidden emotions drive the story. So don't be discouraged by the endless conversations about flowers, ballrooms, gloves and old family scandals that don't really matter anymore.

In the middle of all this, Newland is a rather dull, intelligent young man who thinks he's unconventional. But he becomes more interesting as he struggles between his conscience and his longing for the Countess. And as "Age of Innocence" winds on, you gradually see that he doesn't truly love the Countess, but what she represents -- freedom from society and convention.

The other two angles of this love triangle are May and Ellen. May is (suitably) pallid and rather dull, though she shows some different sides in the last few chapters. And Ellen is a magnificent character -- alluring, mysterious, but also bewildered by New York's hostility to her ways. And she's even more interesting when you realize that she isn't trying to rebel, but simply being herself.

"Age of Innocence" is a subtle look at life in Gilded Age New York, telling the story of a man desperately in love with a way of life he hasn't got the courage to pursue. Exquisite in its details, painful in its beauty.

A book that should be shared between mothers and daughters

I find it interesting and in some ways disturbing how few (openly at least) female viewpoints are expressed among the reviews of this book. Indeed, some of reviews make it appear that there are quite a few males out there who believe females are a sexual "tabula rasa" on which they can write their judgements of what constitutes morally appropriate behavior.
This book must be understood not simply as art, but as a psychological statement, namely that sexuality exists within each of us from infancy on and parents and society deny that at their own risk.
When I was the age of the girls in this book there was no one with the courage to come forward and openly depict the flowering of female sexuality. I lived with confusion and shame about my body and my desires, hurtful feelings that lasted until I was well into my adulthood.
I came across this book in a store one day while looking for something else. I spotted the title and I vaguely remembered a news story about some people wanting to ban it, so I thought I would look at it out of curiosity. The images in it were so beautiful I almost started to cry right there, it was as though I found vindication for the very core of my being.
After taking it home, I decided to share it with my nine-year old daughter with whom I had just recently had "The Talk". It was wonderful being able to show her how her body would change and how she would be beautiful even as she changed from a girl into a woman. It is true there are already books out there that are supposed to address the issue, but so often they take a clinical approach that is scary in its own right. The artistry of this book, combined with the photographer's selection of natural-looking girls (you will not find made-up or coiffed girls in the pages of this book), will, in my opinion, help any girl appreciate her changing body.
Mothers, share this book with your daughters, it will help make so clear the many changes they are going through and how they are positive. No girl should ever have to feel shame of her own body and this book is an important step.

Newland Archer, "a man to whom nothing was ever to happen."

Newland Archer, the protagonist of this ironically entitled novel set in the late nineteenth century, is a proper New York gentleman, and part of a society which adheres to strict social codes, subordinating all aspects of life to doing what is expected, which is synonymous with doing what it right. As the author remarks early in the novel, "Few things were more awful than an offense against Taste." Newland meets and marries May Welland, an unimaginative, shallow young woman whose upbringing has made her the perfect, inoffensive wife, one who knows how to behave and how to adhere to the "rules" of the society in which they live.

When Newland is reintroduced to May's cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, who has left her husband in Europe and now wants a divorce, he finds himself utterly captivated by her freedom and her willingness to risk all, socially, by flouting convention. Both Ellen and Newland, however, are products of their upbringing and their culture, and they dutifully resist their feelings because of their separate social obligations. Various meetings between them suggest that their feelings are far stronger than what is obvious on the surface, and the question of whether either of them will finally state their feelings pervades the novel.

Wharton creates an exceptionally realistic picture of New York in the post-Civil War era, a time in which aristocrats of inherited wealth found themselves competing socially with parvenus, and social rules were changing. Her ability to show the conflict between a person's desire for freedom and his/her need for social acceptance is striking. As the various characters make their peace with their decisions--either to conform to or to challenge social dictates--the novel achieves an unusual dramatic tension, subtle because of its lack of direct confrontation and powerful in its effects on individual destinies. This is, in fact, less an "age of innocence" than it is an age of social manipulation.

Wharton herself manipulates the reader--her best dialogues are those in which the characters never actually participate--conversations that they keep to themselves, confrontations which they never allow themselves to have, and resolutions which happen through inaction rather than through decision-making. Filled with acute social observations, the novel shows individuals convincing themselves that obeying social dictates is the right thing to do. Though the novel sometimes seems to smother the reader with its limitations on action, Age of Innocence brilliantly captures the age and attitudes of the era. Mary Whipple

I no longer believe, as I did in the past, that I need to change the person that I am and put on some kind of front in order to go out with an attractive woman. I no longer have a morbid fear of rejection that makes me unable to approach an attractive stranger. All this is because I have, over the years, managed to break the whole 'getting a date' thing into a workable science - a real life theoretical model on how to land a date (or multiples dates) with attractive women. This model relies on the underlying principles of mathematical Foraging Theory, which I happened to research in college.

Consequently, this guide lays down a framework for us geeks and nice guys to implement once we understand the basic principles of my science, which I have laid out in a fun and easy to understand manner. Once those are established, the theory is implemented in 5 distinct phases. This has the advantage of narrowing your focus to immediate, achievable objectives with each of your "pursuits" - women you desire - so that grandiose expectations do not interfere to cloud your actions.

Please bear in mind that this guide is NOT some "get laid tonight" sham that offers you lame instant sexual gratification how-to's with women. No! This is a scientific approach to a date-getting strategy for the reserved and docile (and smart) personalities out there - one that I have generated using proposition, observation, reiteration, and finally, validation via personal results.

With all the books out there by pickup artists it is refreshing to find a book by a man who knows how to act like a gentleman. Women do seem to be attracted to men who treat them bad. Why is this? Well as Art Langton explains, apparently women just like a challenge.

If you are looking for ways to use and abuse women you won't find them here. This is a guide for men who want to treat women like valuable human beings, not disposable bodies.

What this book seeks to do is to teach men how to capture a woman's interest and curiosity. Therefore making her want to date you.

I found this book to be funny and intellectual. If you like science or math then some of this book will amuse you. This whole book is really a scientific approach to getting a date with the female you desire.

This book is appropriate for religious men too. It does not promote pickup artist techniques. Finally I've found a book that teaches men how to be polite and respectful. This is a rare book indeed.

A living picture of Paul. Historical, insightful, in depth.

From the first paragraph of their introduction: "The purpose of this work is to give a living picture of St. Paul himself, and of the circumstances by which he was surrounded." Actually, they did far more than that modest sentence indicates. Either Conybeare or Howson (or both of them) personally walked and sailed everywhere that the Apostle traveled! Their account is a great travelogue, an historical tour-de-force, and an insightful Christian analysis and examination of Paul's ministry. Included in the book are the authors' own translations from the Greek of Paul's inspired writings!

Tough, but good

This work was written in the 19th century, so the language can be challenging. This is not casual reading. That being said, I have found it to be one of the best biographies of Paul. So many of the others seem really to be the author's projections of some point of view they hold onto the apostle Paul. The authors at times run off into speculation, but these are clearly marked. I am sure it is dated with respect to the archeology of the middle east and Greece.

A superb book!

This outstanding book captivated me from beginning to end.

In fact, it is not an easy read. I needed far more than a dictionary to see me through it, and even then, I could not figure out some of (what I thought) were its more obscure/dated references. Biblical atlases, regular atlases, and encyclopedias, as well as other reference books, were stacked by my side as I slogged through it. But it was worth every moment!

These two can write! The book is thorough, the notes are excellent, and I never felt like these two had an agenda, which is something I value when I read books.

I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get to know St Paul for themselves.

The world did not move far from the 19 century

Fire and Sword of Rudolf Slatin gives living images, detailed descriptive and interesting narrative of Sudan and Sudanese conditions in the late 19th century . This book is a personal narrative and reflection of Rudolf Slatin life in Sudan as a young man in his early twenties appointed as the governor of the vast region of Darfur.The young Austrian soldier was later surrounded to save his life to the leader of the Mahadists armed revolution that swapped Sudan in 1885.
Slatin even went further to show loyalty to his captives by pretending to be a Muslim and present himself as one of the Caliphat Al Mahadi loyal servants. For more than 12 years Slatin lived through the 19 century militant and militarized Mahadists regime, largely mirroring the current Islamic militants regimes like Boko Haram or Elshbab of Somalia. Although in his book Slatin consistently reflected his undermining and disrespect for the men who controlled his life for 12 years or more. His narrative presented a strong images and interesting details of the dynamic of the relationships between colonialists and their colonial nations. The the book gives fascinating description about the process of the Mahadists nation wide revolt against of the Turkish-Egyptian ruling and their European allies in Sudan. Slatin as a trained military man gives descriptions of the 19 century brutal battles.

Reading this book and being Sudanese myself seems as if time traveled backwards and Sudan's was never able to overcome that particular moment of the Mahadist militant and militarized regime. Slatin despite his own conflicting, arrogant views of Sudanese people interactions and living, his book some how and interesting enough reflected on the strong ties that connect the hybrid nations of Sudan and some how unites their destiny. Slatin is the typical young imperial officer who is over empowered you see his representation every where in our time in Iraq , Afghanistan or in Mali.
Rudolf Slatin maintains great narration ability and while telling his story and his transformation from a master into a slave and the transformation of the whole country from an ottoman colonial country
into Islamic militant state, the first of it it is kind in the region causing unrest across Sudan and Ethiopia and Egypt.
Slatin book gives an accurate reflection of the inherited confusion of colonialism towards Sudan and Sudanese as Arabs non Arabs Africans or blacks a confusion continued to hunt Sudan until present time.
