Book Review

This book is a classic on English history, focused on the period after the romans through the Crusades. It is an older book, so the English is dated. Overall i enjoyed the book
I enjoyed the book, Thumbnails of the English ruling class for about 800 years, so the details aren't as focused as if it was a biography of particular kings. If you are an anglophile, this is a must book for you.

A recounting of the history of England from the perspective of a Scotish scholar during the time of the American Revolution

For a book written over 200 years ago, it is remarkably relevant. In my personal and formal studies of world history, I had only a cursory glance at the history of England. I have, for years, felt the vacuum of ignorance concerning the history of this great nation and once great empire. I was drawn to this work because of its perspective of having been written about the time of the American revolution. I was singularly intrigued by the fact that it covers 'up to' the Revolution (not the American revolution).
I was surprised at how easy the language is to understand. Sure, I did have to look up a few words that have fallen from the vernacular of late, but enjoyed the opportunity to include the obsolete pronunciations in my understanding of the English language, for which I appreciate the British allowance of our (the 'colonies') free use and butchery.
The book has the feel of an old Uncle sitting around the fireplace on a chilly, drizzly, night recounting his decades of historical studies in the old archives. He does a good job of filtering out the irrelevant and focusing on the pertinent and interesting occurrences of history. He also documents the sources of some of the more foggy or controversial historical accounts and relates his analysis of the most likely scenarios.
I have enjoyed many an evening reading this narrative and looking forward to the next encounter. I have at times had to put days and even a week or two between dives into the work, but have been able to jump right back in and enjoy its rich supply.
If you are any sort of student of history or curious at all of the ancient mindset and actions of mankind in the British Isles, this is a must read.

Plan to re-read this again; very informative and interesting. Will look for more history about Europe's earliest histories. Highly recommend.
