Review
"Killer's Diary is an intense and compelling page-turner that will keep you guessing and engrossed from the first page to the novel's end. Those who enjoy psychological horror ala Thomas Harris' Silence of the Lambs will love Killer's Diary."
—Norman L. Rubenstein, SHROUD: The Quarterly Journal of Dark Fiction & Art

"What author Brian Pinkerton has done is to smoothly meld his story across genres, running it down several twisting alleys and managing, somehow, to have those alleys open back up onto the same street to converge in a very tight, very satisfying ending. VERY highly recommended."
—David Niall Wilson, former President of the Horror Writer’s Association and multiple recipient of the Bram Stoker Award

"Pinkerton has written a winner, a neatly packaged, taut-as-a-bowstring thriller that fans of Harlan Coben and John Grisham should swallow whole."
—Horror World on Vengeance

It was ok

The book started out slow and I thought boring. Picked up near the end but I don't think it was worth reading the boring part.

Interesting plot
By Karen M. Rodiek
When a lonely young woman meets Mr. Right she doesn't realize that the diary of his that she has been reading, includes dangerous information. Trying to find out his secrets without revealing the knowledge she has proves difficult and she can't decide what is true and what isn't. The murders described in the diary are fact; young women are being murdered in Chicago and their eyes are removed. The plot keeps you involved, the writing isn't bad, particularly as it's a male writer writing as a female. This was a Kindle loan book and I would definitely pruchase other books by this author.

If you like Hitchcock movies...
By W. D. Gagliani
If you like Hitchcock movies there's a good chance you'll enjoy this novel by the author of Rough Cut, How I Started the Apocalypse, and Abducted, among others. While Killer's Diary is ostensibly a serial killer novel, Pinkerton uses the palette he's given to explore various modern issues -- privacy, abuse, responsibility, etc. -- but wrapping up the package in a "serial killer novel" with a slightly sharper edge than usual.

Ellen is a woman making it on her own in a small way, working in a Chicago bookstore. Shy and intentionally a bit mousy, she was abused as a child and managed to break away from her dysfunctional family. While indulging in her daily routine at her favorite coffee shop she finds a handwritten diary and despite knowing it's wrong, takes it home and begins reading. Immediately relating to the writer, she finds a kindred soul: lonely, introspective, abused. She finds herself falling for the writer. Hoping to meet whoever the writer may be while not divulging her secret, she enters into a tenuous friendship with Charles, another regular. While they hit it off, it also becomes obvious to Ellen that Charles is not being entirely truthful. Is he the diary's author? If so, she wants desperately to befriend him, for they are indeed kindred souls. Meanwhile, a serial killer has been targeting women in the same Chicago area. The murders are brutal and the killer takes his victims' eyes, presumably as trophies. Ellen continues to read and savor the diary while coming closer and closer to an intimate relationship with Charles, but suddenly the diary's tone darkens. Is it fiction or fact? Is Charles the writer? Is he the killer? This is where Pinkerton turns the screws on you in an entirely Hitchcockian manner. Ellen can't help being drawn to Charles, but she also can't help starting to believe he may be the serial killer. But if she's wrong... it will ruin his life. How much danger is she in? What if Charles learns she has his diary? Suspicion, when done well and handled as a sort of obsession, can be a very effective way to ratchet up suspense, and Pinkerton is masterful with this approach. The scenes featuring the killer's point of view are just enough to help wind the wires more tightly around Ellen as she navigates her feelings, her guilt at snooping into Charles's darkest secrets, and then her suspicion that he is not who and what he seems to be.

This is a good example of the "micro-horror" I would argue is often the most effective and rewarding -- it's not the world that's in danger, it's a person like you and me, a recognizable friend, neighbor, coworker, one who has made a decision that may well impact her life (!) and who may pay the consequences. It's close, stifling, chilling, and ultimately very frightening. It's the sort of story you might get when interviewing a neighbor of the serial killer, learning that he was someone who wore many masks. What happens if the masks slip -- or seem to?

Brian Pinkerton has a winner of a novel here, horror with strong psychological subtext. Great cinematic sequencing of scenes creates a whirlpool of paranoia that slowly grabs characters and readers alike and won't easily let go. Think movies like "Suspicion, "Dial M for Murder," and "Wait Until Dark" as models for the plot. Definitely a cut above similar fare, Killer's Diary will grasp and hold your interest until the last moment.

--W.D. Gagliani, author of Wolf's Trap
