Poor book, full of common sense but little actual value

In addition to reading this short book, I've also purchased some of the author's products online, including a recall program and another similar type product. I think he's studied a range of other dog training books and simply rehashed a lot of what he's read and written his own books.
There's very little actual instruction and a lot of basic common sense that any dog owner would already know. In a recall video, he worked with an Australian Shepherd dog using a long line. This dog was already, clearly previously well trained as she came when called and didn't try to venture away from him. It was clear that this dog would have been just as obedient off the leash as on it and the whole thing was thoroughly staged and unconvincing. He explains the 'Premack' principle that works on the premise that if the dog does something it doesn't want to do (like come when called), that good things happen afterwards and it will be rewarded. This is similar to telling children to eat their vegetables to get their dessert. Nothing wrong with this concept, but he doesn't show how to do it with the dog and merely states its importance.
I feel he's not really a genuine dog trainer, or one with little experience of problem dogs. Try reading Jean Donaldson or Karen Pryor instead.

Learned alot

I have been following Eric for about 2 years. His approach to dog training is very easy and logical. My rat terrier, Roxie, is a calmer and happier dog since I have followed Eric's tips and tricks. Would recommend him to all my dog friends.

An easy quick book

I found this book to be engaging and useful. The advice is very well thought out and practical. Throughout the book only positive reinforcement is advocated and he does a good job of explaining why.
