a full house

I love Alyssa's books and this one was no less. Nice romance and get together story. Innocent lady meets hard player and softens him.
You need to like romance to read this but she also gives a good insight into how much we are influenced by our upbringing.

There are lots of small everyday life lessons here. Honesty for one and facing responsibility for another.
I find with Alyssa's you can live through the characters and she gives a good insight into what each one is thinking.

Sad to say, but I was a little disappointed.

I have read other books by Alyssa Kress and loved them, a lot. So when I saw this one I figured, why not? I did like the story line, but there was so much silent dialogue to get through, that it soon became very boring. BTW- By silent dialogue...I mean the characters thought and feelings running through their heads, rather than the real speaking dialogue. It just seemed as though for every 3-4 lines of spoken dialogue, there was about 9-10 pages of silent dialogue, and sometimes even more than that. I know that stories have to have a certain amount of that to let the readers know what they are thinking or what they're really feeling at times, but in this story the author was more focused on that then she was with the real spoken dialogue.

But... we were lucky enough to get two love stories in one, so that was a real plus in my book.

School Exercises for Flatwork & Jumping

I have owned this book for 5 years and think it is one of the better, simplified handbooks for riders and instructors alike. It has clear, concise diagrams, explanations and ways to problem solve for each exercise, so that even a novice rider or beginning instructor could easily understand the exercises and the reasons for them. We were memebers of US Pony Club growing up and one of our primary focuses around horses was and is always safety. The author offers very helpful ways to deal with possible problems/outcomes during the exercises so that not just the "how" is covered, but the "why" as well. When instructing novice riders or children, this approach is particularly helpful. For someone schooling horses on their own, these ideas are most helpful in creating a positive experience for both horse and rider. I would recommend this book to any equestrian.

What I loved about this story is the fact that very, very little has changed in centuries. It was written in Latin around 1128. Abelard depicted the dominant male just as easily as if he lived today. Heloise lived her life as a submissive female -- putting more value on men than on women. This was a true story. A must read.

can be read out of series sequance

I read this one with out reading the first in the series and I had no problem following the story. I am a fan of Dana Marie Bell and loved this book. I totally was on the hero's side from page one and with out spoiling the story totally loved when he gathered his courage and asked his sister-in-laws grandmother if he was a total failure as a witch in front of his family her answer and how it hit home with his brothers was perfect. A must read highly recommended. JL

Zachary Beckett grew up in a family of wizards always being thought of as a very weak magical being. Because the men of Zachary's family are also werewolves, it is a shock when they all learn that Zachary isn't a weak wizard but a strong witch. Witches have to learn their craft very different from wizards, so Zachary is sent to the Witches court to be taught. However, something seems to go very wrong when Zachary tries even the simplest of spells and yet he was able to save his brother's life with a very strong and intense spell not that long ago. Just what is Zachary and can he learn before he loses all hope to ever gain control of his magic.

Jo Yashodhar is the teacher for the juvenile witches and she is a member of the royal court. Not long after Zachary arrives at the court, his track record is not good and he is finally bounced into her class. Jo is at her wits end when even her youngest students seem to be able to control their magic better than Zachary can. It makes no sense to Jo and finally she loses her temper when Zachary latest mess involves the royal family itself. She tells him to go, just go and Zachary decides to do that.

Jo can't get over her unease when she can't locate Zachary and it just gets worse the more she learns about him. Things that she should have found out about before lead her to a theory on why Zachary has so many problems with his magic. If she is right, Zachary is much stronger than anyone at court realized and they might have harmed him rather than helped. Zachary is more than surprised when Jo shows up at his brother's house and even more surprised to realize she is his fated mate. Zachary tries to turn Jo away until his family and his wolf convince him to listen to her theory. Maybe, just maybe, Zachary is much more than a witch and super strong when it matters; and it matters now because the Becketts' enemies have kidnapped Jo and it will take all the Beckett brothers to help save her. But it will mostly take Zachary and Jo's belief in his powers to make sure they can have the bright future their love deserves.

Court life all but destroys a werewolf/witch's belief in himself until a teacher proves to him the truth and in doing so they discover a love not to be denied. Hecate's Own brings Zachary and Jo together in a very bumpy road of magical discovery and passion. As I watched Zachary get more and more discouraged, I so wanted to smack some of those court idiots, but I guess it was all worth it when he went back and proved just who and what he was. I wondered if Jo would be as bad as the others until she proved her belief in Zachary by following him and making him and his family listen to her and the truth. The identity of the person Jo brought in to help Zachary was very interesting knowing the Becketts' past. When Jo was kidnapped, I had no doubt that Zachary would triumph and bring Jo home safe and sound. I had to laugh as I read about Zachary's return to the Court and how they reacted to him now. I can't wait until the next Beckett brother finds his mate. Hecate's Own takes magic, shape shifting and suspense and wraps it up in humor to make this a keeper in my opinion.

Zachary Beckett is youngest of four brothers, and the one most likely to mess up. Born into a family of powerful wizards, Zach feels like he has always let his family down, being the weakest member of the family, with unpredictable magic. When his brother's mate (did I mention the Beckett men are cursed to be wolves, too?) discovers why Zach's magic goes wrong, he starts to feel a bit of hope. Seems Zach is not a wizard at all, but actually Lana tells him he is a witch, and a powerful one at that. When he is sent for witch training, he still has difficulty with control, and is finally put in a novice class taught by Johra Jo Yashodhar. Jo has no idea why Zach can't control his magic, even Prince Roland is ready to bind his powers, but when evil threatens Zach's family, a little research reveals that Zach is one of the rarest of witches, one of Hecate's Own, chosen by the Goddess herself to fight evil magic and rogue warlocks. And Jo is his destined mate, causing all kinds of complications. When the evil stalking his family threatens Jo, Zach's family unites to stop the Godwin's at all costs, even accepting help from unexpected places. Can Zach keep Jo safe, after seeing visions of one possible fate for his mate? Can Jo accept Zach and his wolf into her life? Can they accept the help from one very powerful and unexpected ally?

Hecate's Own is the second of Dana Marie Bell's Heart's Desire series, and set in a world both magical and dangerous. This is a well-crafted world, with multi-dimensional and charismatic characters. The Becketts are the good guys here, and are fighting the evil warlocks to stay alive. The fight from book one has gone undercover in this one, with the Godwins hiding until they are ready to strike. I love this world, where people use magic as easy as breathing, well all but Zach, that is. Ms. Bell has given Zach the role of underdog, always trying to prove himself, and making messes along the way. But there is also lots of humor here as well, to lighten the dark and dangerous threat.

Zachary Beckett is smart, handsome and tired of being the one who can do nothing right. In a family filled with strong magic, he feels like a failure, until Lana and her grandmother discover why Zach's magic fails. I like Zach, he is adorable, and so hard on himself I couldn't help feeling sorry for him at times. When he learns that Jo is his mate, he thinks he may have accidentally cast a love spell, and he wants her to become his mate voluntarily. I liked watching him come into his own, and learn how to use his gifts to protect family and friends. Watching as he realized Jo wasn't under a spell and really cared for him was a delight.

Johra `Jo' Yashodhar is one of the strongest witches of her generation, second in magic only to Prince Roland. She is smart, talented, and has a sarcastic edge to her wit that is a delight. I loved her early dialogs with Zach, when she believed he was the biggest menace to the magical community, and I loved that she was able to admit she was wrong when Zach's true power was revealed. I loved that she didn't just fall right into Zach's arms, but let him take the time to convince her of his worth before she convinced him she wanted him.

There is a lot of magical danger in this one, both overt and a bit behind the scenes. The Godwins have continued to turn to evil, and have begun to practice the darkest of magic, including blood rites to increase their power. I found the family unity, with all of the Becketts uniting to stop the evil, to be a powerful thread throughout this story. I also liked that the other two Beckett men have learned who their mates are, though it could get complicated at times. The secondary characters, Annabelle, Prince Roland and Princess Arianna, and the Beckett men are all as well crafted as Zach and Jo, and the passion that builds steadily between them turns blazing hot when Zach finally claims Jo as his. I enjoyed the surprise of who became their ally in the fight against the Godwins, and hope to see her with a story in the future. This one is for all those who want some suspense and danger, and more than a little magic with their romance.

a good look at the history of history

It was probably well received in 1908, because its well organized, written in short and easy to understand sentences and paragraphs, and is as comprehensive as you can expect in a book written for middle school or high school students.
HOWEVER... it includes all the prejudice of the time... so, if you want to get a clearer picture on how history was viewed in 1908 by a man who's views were pretty respected by educators across the country, this is your book. It is for this reason that I loved it. Actually, only liked it... the illustrations are not there! There are little captions under boxes that tell you what the picture would have been, and sometimes there is just a box so you know there should have been one, but I would have loved to have the illustrations with the text.
Now, back to Channing, who does not completely overlook how badly the Native Americans were treated by European conquerors, but the references are small. He mentions that some Spanish sailors "stole Indians and carried them to the islands to work as slaves". His next comment, though, is that Cortez "conquered Mexico after a thrilling campaign". No mention of the vast and wonderful culture that was destroyed... He seems to feel sorry for deSoto because the "Indians" gave him "a dreadful time". Sir John Hawkins, of England, sailed to America for Queen Elizabeth, "carried cargoes of negro slaves from Africa to the West Indies and sold them to the Spanish planters." Several times Channing refers to the Indians as "savages", which is what I was taught was basically a synonym for Native American when I was a small child. I am glad that I lived to see the thrust of truth on history. I found it interesting that Channing declares that many of the Scrooby people "preferred to go prison in England rather than lead such a life of slavery in Holland." My own research indicates that the Scrooby Puritans didn't fare so well economically in Holland, and they really didn't like that their children were exposed to other ways of life by their Dutch neighbors, but Holland did not by any means enslave the Puritans.
There are many really interesting glimpses into the paradigm of the day, but a few are too cool to not mention... In discussing the Wilmot Proviso (1846) Channing says, "...Texas must be a slave state. Most people were agreed that Oregon should be free soil. For it was too far north for negroes to thrive." He thought black people need warm weather, apparently. I almost laughed out loud.
There is still a bit of political correctness that keeps modern history books from being specific about the "whole" truth... this book charges right on about Stephens (vice president of the Confederacy) statement that "foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man." Modern texts rarely mention that the great abolitionists were loathe to fight FOR the negro, and Channing goes right ahead and reminds us that the great abolitionist Greeley thought the south had the moral right to form its own nation based on slavery.
Channing also glorifies the exploits of this country in its colonization and conquering of Puerto Rico, the Phillipines, etc. Of course, he was writing a mere 15 years and less after our expansion into these areas, and did not have the passage of time to clarify vision...
Organization is one of this books shining triumphs. It is much better organized than many of the textbooks currently in use in middle and high schools.
You might also be aware that you'll need to know some archaic names for places... He talks about Columbus believing it was only 3000 miles to Cipango, but if you don't know that Cipango was what Marco Polo called Japan, it might not mean much. There are other such references, and some political movements have also been renamed over the years, so a passing general knowledge of American History might be a good idea before reading this.
But, as maybe you can tell, I love history, and I enjoyed this historical look at the study of history....

The worst.

Is this even a book? It's so chock full of spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and poor sentence structure that it's almost impossible to understand. As for the content, a twelve year old could have come up with more insight. An absolute waste of money and I feel like a fool for paying anything for it. My bad. I'll pay more attention next time.

Comprehensive guide for choosing a breed

If you are a pet lover especially a dog/puppy lover, choosing the best match is always a difficult task. Even my sister had this issue when deciding what kind of dog to own. In such a situation selecting a breed type is really challenging as most of the dogs behave themselves and exhibit traits according to their breed type. In this little kindle version, Sophie has provided almost all the kinds of breeds with the characteristics and come up with the guidelines to pick out a breed that would be the best for the reader. Great and lovely work. Recommended!!

Great advice on how to pick the right dog

This is a very insightful and thorough book for the breeds that it presents. The only criticism I would offer is that I wish the book included more breeds. However, that being said, I feel that someone seeking a dog could use the process Miller presents for these breeds to determine whether any other breed is a good fit. Personally, I am partial to Redbone Coonhounds, but they seem to be a lesser known breed. I also have a Golden Retriever and Miller's assessment is for the most part very correct. Each dog is going to have its quirks that either match or differ from the tendencies of the breed. Miller offers assessments for each breed in the book and lets a would-be owner know what the pitfalls may be for each breed as well as the blessed benefits. I wouldn't trade my dogs for anything, regardless of any drawbacks there may be to their specific breed. As Miller points out, it is best to know what kinds of things you will expect your dog to do with you, such as dog sports or therapy work. Maybe you'd rather have a couch potato dog that keeps pace with your sedentary lifestyle, in which case I would recommend the Redbone, but Miller's book will help you hone in on which dog would be best for you in that case, as well. Be sure to follow her guidelines on researching the breed and you should be well on your way to finding a long-term companion.

Excellent working guide.

We have always had dogs, but always one someone gave us, or we rescued or sheltered from the pound. However, now we have toddlers running around and are searching for the "right" breed for us! Reading this book gave me great insight into what types of breeds would fit well into our family life. I believe this ebook to be an excellent working guide for "beginner" pet lovers, or those more experienced! Choosing a pet for me is sometimes hard, because I tend to fall in love with all of them! I think now, however, I might have a better understanding of what breed might want ME for their human. Would highly recommend!

About the Author
Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

great way to get her exposed to spanish by reading both the spanish and english to her. great value at this price.
