About the Author
John O'Brien is a former Air Force fighter instructor pilot who transitioned to Special Operations for the latter part of his career gathering his campaign ribbon for Desert Storm. Immediately following his military service, John became a firefighter/EMT with a local department. Along with becoming a firefighter, he fell into the Information Technology industry starting two large casinos in Washington as the Information Technology Manager and becoming the Network Manager for the Washington State Legislature, the Northwest Information Technology Manager for the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Network Systems Manager for Hollywood Video. Currently, John is writing full-time on the series, A New World.
As a former marathon runner, John lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest and can now be found kayaking out in the waters of Puget Sound, mountain biking in the Capital Forest, hiking in the Olympic Peninsula, or pedaling his road bike along the many scenic roads.

I kinda enjoyed it, But...

First of all I kinda enjoyed the book, what little of it there was, but i had to deduct a couple of stars from this one for a few things. I think that the series has been gripping and extremely fun to read. This book however felt like a "money" book to me and what I mean by that is it seemed like filler with no content. Like he forcefully put words on paper. The plot moved forward at a snails pace and for a very short book, never good. He also started doing something that is just a personal pet pieve of mine and that is telling the same story from multiple angles of different people. Kinda works in the movies, not so much here, Its literally the same story just through someone elses eyes. Then you ad in "over describing" like 10 pages of a zombie crawling across the ground, or 7-8 pages of what a character is thinking in one moment, which is fine and well, but when you read that and realize "wow that was 10%" of the book on that single event. Then the whole book seemed anti-climatic from the cliff hanger that was left from the last one, but of course you have to leave this one on a cliff hanger, and that felt rushed and honestly, not very well thought out (pretty much the complete opposite this entire series has been). All that being said, I'll probably buy the next book, because the series as whole has been great, but if it is more of the same as this one, im done.

A good read, but not as good as the previous

John, we have talked numerous occasions via e-mail regarding your books, and the release of Dissension, and as you know I have reviewed nearly every book in the series, so allow me to review the newest addition.
*****THIS REVIEW WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS, I WILL ANNOUNCE BEFORE DISCUSSING*****
Overall, I enjoyed Dissension. I waited for a long time for it to be released, e-mailing the author several times for updates. I was ecstatic to see, on Christmas Eve, that it was on Kindle. I had been checking nearly daily for a couple months, but for some reason the newest book didn't actually appear in the search results for over a week.
While Dissension was definitely a good read, I feel that it was not nearly as good as the previous books. There were bits which seemed over the top, bits that seemed rushed and not thought out, and overall I felt like the book was shorter than the previous books. While I would have rated every previous book between 4 and 5 stars, I can only give this one a 3, for the reasons below.

My first complaint with this is the direction of the story. I felt as if the author was trying to include too many story lines in one book, which prevented any real development on any of them.
I am not entirely sure how I feel about the advancements in the nightrunners abilities (i.e: talking), but I am willing to wait it out and see where it goes, I may like the end result.
Sandra is an odd situation. For some reason, she is drawn to Jack and wants him, while wanting to remove Lynn from the picture. This seems to be odd, but again, I'll wait for this to develop more.
One issue I did notice is that there has not been any mention of Jack's ex wife (and therefore his children's mother) for quite a while. She was a nightrunner, then was "cured" by whatever way, brought in and then kind of disappeared. Even with the death of Nic, she seems to be out of the picture. Where is she during all of this? There are not any details about the children spending time with her or anything like that. Furthermore, with Jack and the kids going on these missions so frequently, you would think their mother would voice a complaint, yet none are made. This seems really odd to me, and I feel like she was brought back just to progress the story, but then the story no longer needed her so she was dropped.
What further intrigues me is the case of Alan. He has a similar situation as the children's mother. Formerly a nightrunner, yet he gets (some) story time. I feel like if the mother was used to progress the story, why not just skip her and use Alan?
Regarding Alan, he was obviously having issues with temporarily having nightrunner instincts and wanting to hunt, etc. One would assume that the mother would be experiencing this as well, but again, she is not discussed in any way, so I feel like it is a large plot hole.
Now when Alan escapes, he somehow manages to walk around all over the place, open multiple doors and leave, without anyone noticing. How is one person, who is apparently suffering from a combination of sleepwalking and being "part" nightrunner, able to open all the entrances and leave without gathering attention? Watkins at one point is explained to "check on it" if Alan doesn't return in a few minutes, which of course just seemed rather convenient to allow him to escape.
While on the topic of the doors, the entire story is based around Jack and the crew not taking any chances, every entrance is locked, relocked and locked again, with guards watching at all times. This is how they have all survived for so long, yet at this point all of this fails them.
More, with the doors, they are described as being apparently single man doors. This is apparent during the Sandra section in which she notices that her pack can only fit through one or two at a time and cannot get in all at once. She "knows" that she will lose many in the process. I have a couple problems with this.
First, multiple times in the earlier books, the same situation has occurred (with less nightrunners), and them only having single entrance (and sometimes even double entrance) doors has allowed them to survive, as the mass of dead nightrunners would literally block the doorway, preventing entrance. Yet, in this case, none of this occurs. They are able to enter so quickly they overrun the security teams.
How are so many able to fit through at once and not block the door from others getting in? When the very first nightrunner gets inside, there was a slight delay, which should have been more than enough time to secure the door.
Next, during all of this happening, it is all from Lynn's perspective, but there isn't any information about any of the civilians in the place. Where are they all at? Sleeping? Nightrunners have gained entrance (in an unbelievable way) and are flooding through their door (in an unbelievable number), and there isn't anything written about what is happening with them. Did they all run to the back to hide, are they helping, etc.
It also seems rather unbelievable that they were overrun so quickly with that much firepower. Literally dozens upon dozens upon dozens of weapons are firing into them and they're overrun in just a few seconds.
To me, all of this just seems like a storyline progression. I know that things have to be done to progress the story, but in my opinion, these were done poorly.
Now with Jack, they leave and find one of the soldiers wives. They then go off in search of anothers family. In the process, a group of survivors denies them access and they kill them with the .50cal, travel through, find the family is dead, and on the return trip the same survivors join them. I have a hard time believing that there wouldn't be some hard feelings over this, despite it occurring out of both groups best interest. I also feel like Jack was suddenly very trusting of this new group. He just killed a handful of their people and he doesn't even mention being slightly worried they may plan a retaliation at some point. Plus, none of the group is even talked about in detail. Sam is mentioned a few times, and the new pilot, Roger, but nothing much. Out of this entire group of people, none of them could bring anything to the storyline? I feel like adding an essential character from this group could have helped tremendously. Also, maybe changing the way the groups met, under different circumstances.
Eventually Jack finds some others who have been infected with a small amount of DNA from nightrunners and survived. They all seem to possess the same enhancements as he does. I have a hard time believing this as well. Surely there are others who may get scratched and survive, but I feel like it takes away from Jack's unique character by introducing others with the same abilities. Maybe they will be used down the road in a huge way, but in my opinion, it would REALLY have to be huge in order to make up for this. It also seems strange that they both somehow survived, solo, and are on the verge of being crazy. Call me skeptical, but by this point it has been pretty well established that there aren't many survivors - yet both of these people have managed alone, with no special training or equipment. Again, I feel like it was a story progression done hastily.
The entire storyline regarding the submarine isn't as I hoped. It all seems somewhat fake and just thrown in as a filler. They're kind of there, they meet, give supplies, and gone. Not much happens. Maybe it'll expand later.
I know there are a few other issues, but at the moment I can't recall them, though I feel like I've stated enough.

With that being said, Dissension is a good book. Don't let the three stars make it seem otherwise. But I am HUGELY disappointed in this addition. A good book indeed, but not as good as it could (and should have) been based on the previous works. Personally, I really wish this book was rewritten. Not entirely, but the sections I stated above I feel need to be revisited. Some stuff either needs to be updated or removed to make this book on par with the others.
I hope the next book is scaled down. I hope it is a bit longer, I hope the story lines decrease so that each one gets a good amount of attention, and I hope what has been stated here is taken note of, so that random filler isn't added, random coincidences don't occur to create a progression, and that characters who were previously introduced as being important either maintain their importance or are removed from the story, IN The story, not by ignoring them.
Overall, I can't wait for the next book, and I hope to see a lot of this flush out to a higher standard like the previous books.

After long wait for next in series - a disappointment

I love this series, but the latest installment was a disappointment. The story is told from multiple points of view, which means the same event is told over and over again. Not only does this not advance the story, but it is not very interesting. Parts of the book felt like they were added just to add to the word count. It felt disjointed. I cannot give other criticism as it would spoil it for readers of the series. If you are a reader of the series, read it anyway as you will want to
know what happens to Jack and the gang, just know that it is not nearly as good as others in the series.
