Nice little cookbook!

I have been badly burned in the past by the hideous typos, awful layout, and the lack of pictures when buying Kindle versions of cookbooks that were originally published in print. (The automated digitization conversion process butchers cookbooks.) But this book caught my eye because it was written and designed for the Kindle. And lo! I wasn't disappointed! Great little cookbook. Super-looking recipes, images, layout, and photograhs. And the price is right!

Delicious recipes!!!

So far I have made the Pan-Roasted Chicken with Mushroom-Fines Herbes Sauce and the Chicken with 20 Cloves of Garlic and both were OUTSTANDING!!! It has inspired me to have a small dinner party next week. I love these recipes. They remind me of the food I ate growing up: Low and Slow French cooking. My purple Le Creuset Braiser has been getting a workout with this book. Can't wait to try all the other recipes!!!!

Wini Moranville's recipes are ones that I return to over and over. This one and her "Bonne Femme Cookbook" are staples in my kitchen. Wholesome, simple ingredients, easy to follow recipes that taste great for everyday or for guests. I highly recommend her work!

Pretty Good

For a free book this is not bad at all. It has many interesting facts that have not been overturned my new evidence. For a layman this is decent introduction to the Hitties and will probably be the only book he or she will want or need to read. I was quite impressed by how much was already known about them by the turn of the century. I expected far less. It's fairly engaging for a text on an ancient people. Thanks to the large amounts of written material left by the Hittites a riveting narrative can be constructed around them. The author did not strike me as overly religious. He used the Bible as a source document written by a culture that interacted with the Hittites; he readily admits that it contains very little useful information. Sayce does a fine job. It is a wonderful piece for a completest or for a hobbyists. Those who straddle the two extremes should avid it.

Very dated historical account

This account was made in 1890, in the very infancy of archaeological exploration of the Hittite civilization. The author himself was part of the vanguard of archaeologists exploring the ruins and vestiges of the Hittite culture. Because of the age of the account, much of what is known now was at that time conjecture. Many of Sayce's speculations have since been proven wrong. The book does provide insight into the process of trying to understand a civilization with limited resources, vandalism or theft of significant artifacts, and governmental bureaucracy. Although I would not recommend it for information on the Hittites, it is an interesting story of the early students of this enigmatic people.

Appeared and vanished ! But yet we search !

Through this book I felt I was part of the early discoveries and progressive deciphering of the Hittite texts and Hittite carvings. After seeing the National Geographic Special on the Hittites I needed to find out more of the history of this Nation and to go through the early research as presented by this book. I immediately found myself transported in time.

Good presentation of a great story ...

I've loved this book since I stumbled upon it a number of years ago. I'm not usually a fan of short stories, but this one is so tightly plotted and suspenseful that it feels like you've finished an entire book by the time you're done. This reading is a good one - the narrator has a fairly deep and slightly rough voice that is a great match for the subject, and he rachets up the tension just enough as the story progresses. It's a great short listen!

A Sure Haven for John Purkiss Fans

If you are looking for an espionage short that is completely engrossing but just long enough to last through your commute, "Haven, A John Purkiss Short Story" is a good bet.

It is another in Tim Stevens' yarns about John Purkiss ("Ratcatcher," "Delivering Calaban"), the lone wolf counterintelligence agent whose job is finding British spies who have decided to augment their pay packets by selling their information or their services to the other side.

In this quickie, Purkiss is on holiday in Malta when he spots Oleksander Motruk, a former Ukrainian secret policeman turned weapons trafficker that is still on MI6's most-wanted list. Purkiss follows the baddie and gets a line on where he can be found, then reports what he has learned to the local Secret Intelligence Service agents, figuring to go back to his vacation once he has alerted them.

But Purkiss finds little welcome at the local SIS detachment. And when he later spots one of the British agents meeting with Motruk, he launches his own investigation. What he finds are Sicilian gangsters, an illicit arms shipment and a double-double-cross.

Unlike Stevens' Purkiss novels -- or his book about the exploits of Martin Calvary, "Severance Kill" -- "Haven" is short and relatively uncomplicated. Stevens manages to deftly sketch the locations where the action takes place and conjures a quick vision of each of the major characters without deploying excessive descriptive prose, opting instead to pack the most action possible into this relatively short novelette.

In doing so, Stevens shows himself a student of the pulp masters by following Raymond Chandler's famous advice, "when in doubt, have a man come through the door with a gun in his hand." Each short section ends with a cliffhanger of some sort, with the effect that the pages seem to just fly by.

This is fortunate, indeed, since it makes Haven a lively yarn that is brief enough to give a Purkiss fan his or her fix without requiring the time commitment needed for Stevens' longer works.

Can't even go on holiday

Sometimes work is where you find it, but sometimes work finds you. This is a quick read which gives you the basics of John Purkiss, the Rat Catcher. (A rat catcher is an agent who convinces rogue agents to "retire" before he has to retire them permanently.) I liked it so well that I bought the whole series.

About the Author
Horace Stanley McCoy (1897–1955) was an American novelist whose gritty, hardboiled novels documented the hardships Americans faced during the Depression and post-war periods. McCoy grew up in Tennessee and Texas; after serving in the air force during World War I, he worked as a journalist, film actor, and screenplay writer, and is author of five novels including They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (1935) and the noir classic Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye (1948). Though underappreciated in his own time, McCoy is now recognized as a peer of Dashiell Hammett and James Cain. He died in Beverly Hills, California, in 1955.

After his huge editorial problems following the writing of his powerful "No Pockets in the Shroud", McCoy comes back to the Hollywood circle and builds a solid story starring a twin brother of Robert "They shoot Horses..." Syverten, Ralph Carston, a more muscled character - as McCoy himself was - but as naive as him, who came from his Southern home to become an actor - as McCoy himself did. He shares a small bungalow with a young pretty girl, Mona Matthews. This time they try to get in movies attending not marathon contests, but luxurious cocktails. But his accent doesn't give Ralph the opportunity to break in movies. He meets a rich old woman who falls in love with him but doesn't do anything for him to succeed as an actor. Naive and stubborn at the same time, he keeps wandering in Hollywood as Mona leaves the city after showing too much in the studios and wasting all of her chances to succeed.
McCoy's painting of Hollywood in the 30's is still valid. It's not as sober and successful as "They shoot Horses..." but it's still very realistic, contemporary and well-described, with a real dramatic intensity. It's a novel which reflects not only what McCoy saw in Hollywood (where he worked as a screenwriter from 1933 to the end of his life), but also his own disillusions: he came to Hollywood in 1931 to work as an actor and a screenwriter but failed as an actor, because of his accent.
Begun with "They shoot Horses, don't they?", McCoy's Hollywood "dilogy" ends with this short book where the writer invests himself mainly in Johnny Hill, an attractive, realistic character able (like Mike Dolan did in "No Pockets in a Shroud") to anticipate World War II.

unsung composer of crime

Horace McCoy is simply one of the finest stylists to have operated in the noir form. He was a conflicted fellow who felt he ought to be a variation on Fitzgerald but who was actually blessed with a fine talent for something very different from his hero. This conflict tortured him(and led to a couple of bland but very successful mainstream novels) but resulted in three of the great books of noir---I Should Have Stayed Home, They Shoot Horses, Don;'t They? and Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye. He was a true poet of the grim reality and horribly neglected .

Bad title, good book

I really liked this book. Its an interesting 1930s novel about the corrupting influence of Hollywood on a pair of wannabe movie extras by the author of THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? The main character is a country boy from Georgia who doesn't want to learn to act and is content to sit around waiting to be "discovered" and molded into a movie star. Desperate for money, one of the minor characters is driven to shoplifting and eventually to suicide.

The Hollywood characters are all superficial and have no interest in anything but the movies. The book is not a crime novel, just an interesting portrayal of average people and what the desire for fame can do to them. Although the book was written years ago, it has a modern feel and universal appeal. A worthwhile read.
