a trial to read

I had been wanting to get a book of Addison's essays ever since reading Samuel Johnson's famous advice about improving one's prose: "Whoever wishes to attain an English style, familiar but not coarse, elegant but not ostentatious, must give his days and nights to the volumes of Addison."
They're devilishly hard to find, however. I thought my train had come in when I saw this cheap Kindle book on Amazon, but it's a disaster. There are usually two or three blank lines between each paragraph, and the text doesn't justify fully on the left: believe it or not, the text alternates between lines that do, and lines that only reach halfway across the screen. It's very disorienting, like you're reading a poem or something.
And this is not to mention the many scanning mistakes that have not been corrected. Sheesh. Why doesn't Amazon hire a couple of unremarkable English majors to make sure everything's formatted correctly before releasing it on the Kindle?
Needless to say, there's no "linked" table of contents (or ANY table of contents), for that matter, so I hope you don't mind reading from page one!

The good humour and pleasure one gets from reading Addion and Steele is thoroughly destroyed when faced with poor editing, unlinked footnotes and the absence of tabe of contents. This edition is suitable for only those ready to read a book with close to 30,000 locations while braving the above odds.
