A sadly neglected novelist

Gissing tells all about Victorian middle-class society and the shabby genteel who are its victims. Too well educated to work at menial jobs and not hypocritical enough to pass muster before publishers and critics, intelligent and sensitive writers had to starve, die or give in to the establishment. The courage of these poor souls should have earned them medals, but most are forgotten and despised. Read Grub Street for a start.

I was not familiar with George Gissing prior to reading this novel. The story of two writers,and their approach to making a
living in 18th century England. Author a classic masterpiece to secure wealth, or marry a wealthy women to smooth the
way to success,fame,and fortune. I could detect an influence of Charles Dickens. Wikipedia notes he was once called one
of the most influential British authors. I would not go that far, but it is a good read. Try it!

I am slowly making my way through the complete works of George Gissing--and loving it. I intersperse his books with contemporary police procedurals, mostly, reading a Gissing then a John Sandford, say. The Gissing books tend to meld together in my mind (I have read about 20 so far), but I enjoy them for their consistently spot-on portrayals of women and the relationships between men and women. Thank you, George!

Take the pursuit of God and spiritual warfare more seriously.

I certainly did not know much about this ancient monk prior to reading the book. I ran across a reference to it and thought that it might be inspiring. It certainly was. This is a man who had means but gave it all up in order to focus on his devotional life with God. He lived alone with meager means. He was steeped in Scripture. He was successful in engaging in spiritual warfare. He did great battle with demonic powers. He had the gift of discernment. He was aware of doctrinal controversy and spoke out against Arianism. As his life progressed, he became a sage with tremendous insight and wisdom. Even though he lived alone on a mountain, many people came to see him. Many were healed. Many demons were cast out. Many gained wisdom. He never wrote a book nor created any art, yet his influence widened over time. In a day when we are obsessed with social platforms and social media, it is refreshing to see that God himself gave a wide influence to someone who did not seek it. Instead, Antony's influence was widened as spirituality was deepened. I was inspired to pursue holiness through prayer and meditation in a deeper way.

Did not know about this Saint and found this book an interesting read and have recommended it to others. Used this book also in Adoration and medition. Amazing life of one spiitual man who infulenced many at the time and continues to do so!

Just in time to capitalize on the cinematic vogue for samurai epics comes this new translation of a classic 17th-century Japanese swordsmanship manual. Heavily influenced by Zen Buddhism, Munenori, a swordsmanship instructor to several Shoguns, downplays the training and extols the spiritual enlightenment and life lessons to be gained through martial arts. A few rules of thumb like "you attain the victory by having your opponent make the first move" and "it is dangerous to get any closer than one foot" could be useful in a sword fight, but actual combat maneuvers like Billowing Clouds, Flower Wheel and Sword of Mystery must be learned through "oral transmission" since "they are difficult to express in written words." (A lengthy appendix taken from another source, containing period illustrations and detailed but still opaque instructions on fighting moves, confirms this insight.) Instead of specific routines, Munenori emphasizes the attainment of No-Mind, the Zen version of "flow" in which one's swordplay proceeds without self-conscious thought. The book's philosophy, it must be said, is also pretty difficult to express in written words, and is conveyed through poetic imagery ("with a pilfered glance, the dragonfly evades the shrike") and mystic paradoxes ("that which is called existence is nothing other than non-existence, and that which is called non-existence is none other than existence.") Munenori's rambling exposition of it may lead readers to conclude that, whatever wisdom comes of a lifetime of sword fighting, it doesn't impart a polished literary sensibility. Fortunately, Wilson, translator of several samurai works, includes a substantial biography of Munenori that illuminates the political and cultural background of the samurai ethos and clarifies Munenori's doctrines for novice readers. Masterpiece Treaty on the Way of the Sword

First and foremost this is not a story for entertainment nor is it a manual that will teach you how to use a sword. This is a deeply philosophical investigation into the Zen mind required to master the sword. Experienced practitioners will get the most out of it. Beginners will stumble through it and most of the value will be lost. It requires many reads and deep contemplation together with practice to really come to life.

The first 60-pages of the book are very interesting, as Wilson takes us through a brief synopsis of the life and times of Munenori with some descriptions of his character and people he associated with. Munenori was a very colorful character who was a teacher and adviser to shoguns, winning the post against Musashi himself.

The Yagyu clan is an old ninja family who live in the mountains outside Nara. Their village is surrounded by rice paddies and is difficult to approach. At one point Musashi traveled there to challenge Munenori (who was conveniently not present) and instead wound up dueling and killing a master of the kusurigama, a sickle with a chain and weight on the end and a common ninja weapon.

The actual Life Giving Sword is about 70-pages long and is mostly a philosophical zen treaty with application for any martial art, but geared to the Way of the sword. Also included are 28 prints from the Illustrated Catalog of the Shinkage-ryu, which offers brief descriptions of the techniques and includes the "Tengu Series".

This is an essential book for any sword practitioner, or anyone involved in the martial arts. I can't recommend it enough.

Giving life to the sword

Anyone who looks to a book to learn how to swing a sword will forever be disappointed. Those of us who have actually taken the time train in the sword know that direct transmition is the only way (yes, the schools still exist -- go find one).
What this book presents (along with some very good subtle sword pointers) is the proper mental attitude you must gain in order to progress on the path. Mr. Wilson does a wonderful job translating a difficult text. If you are serious about sword, get this book AND go find a teacher ...

I surely love this book

Mr. Yagyu Munenori had a crystal clear mind so grounded in Zen, his writings amazingly show how Mankind has taken a big step back in being grounded in the "Now." I find his words so comforting, and when applied to the practice of the sword, they manifest themselves physically into action. It is one thing to seek enlightenment through books, but it seems only through physical experience can true manifestation of that knowledge be put to use. I love how you learn to throw away the mind, "No Mind" and live in the freedom of your actions. If your mind lingers anywhere, it becomes trapped. I see this "sickness" of the trapped mind everywhere today in people. They are trapped in the past, or a future of which they dream, and are looking forward to a reality that does not exist. They are not "here" when you speak to them. Their mind is caught in a dream, like a lotus eater, glassy eyed and harried.

Other than children and animals, it's very hard these days to find people who are absorbed in the present moment. No future, no past, only living for that moment. This book is like a soothing ointment to straighten jagged thoughts of delusion. A must read.

About the Author
Victor T. Foia was born in Transylvania where he studied theoretical physics at the university of Cluj. At the age of 22 Victor escaped from behind the Iron Curtain and defected to Italy. After a waiting period of months spent in UN refugee camps, he emigrated to the United States. There Victor graduated from the Universities of Illinois and Dallas. He then embarked upon a career as an international corporate executive. Presently he is engaged full time in writing historical fiction. Victor’s interest in Dracula dates from the age of six, when he first visited his compatriot’s birthplace only a hundred miles from his own. Soon this interest became a lasting passion for research into Dracula’s life. Exploring castles, fortresses, and monasteries throughout Eastern Europe and the Middle East, Victor went beyond the iconic Dracula literature to ferret out the essence of the man behind the Legend. The four decade long quest has taken Victor to virtually all the places where Dracula lived, loved, fought, and was imprisoned. In the end, by the empty tomb from where the prince disappeared without a trace 535 years ago, Victor felt his journey of discovery was complete and now the story of the real Dracula could be told.

Gem of a first novel that leaves you craving for more

Every once in a rare while I stumble on a book where, once I start reading, I find myself itching to get back to it whenever it's not open right in front of me - including after I've finished it. This is one of those books. What makes it more notable than your average page-turner is that the author, Victor T. Foia, is a novice novelist who's managed to just really nail it the first time. How often does that happen? The last time I had this kind of personal reaction to a first novel was with Khaled Hosseini's opener, "The Kite Runner", in 2003. The last time before that was with Nick Hornby's "Fever Pitch" in 1992. And we're given to understand that there's going to be a second time, a third, and more because Son of the Dragon is billed as Volume One in a series: The Dracula Chronicles. If the future installments (may they arrive speedily) are anywhere close to the quality of this initial effort, Mr Foia's new fan base (may it multiply plentifully) has some years of outstanding entertainment to look forward to.

I'm a history afficionado and if you are too, you should definitely check this book out. Without a trace of dryness, Son of the Dragon is an impeccably researched, historically faithful portrait of a fascinating place and time: 15th Century Wallachia (part of present-day Romania) during the Ottoman-Hungarian Wars when it sat nervously wedged between the land-hungry Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary, to which Wallachia was culturally closer but not exactly a paragon of good will and fraternity. This was a time of gypsies and kings, crusaders and jihadis, dark castles and darker forests replete with robbers and wolves - real-life archetypes for the fairy tales we all know, not to mention the Dracula vampire legend itself. All are masterfully brought to life by Mr Foia.

The historical yarn alone would have been enough for me. But as a horror fan, I loved this book as well. This is not a horror story, but you'll certainly get your fill of fear and spurting gore (like I said, it's never dry). And after reading it you may want to go back to your favorite "traditional" Dracula adaptations with the new perspectives you've gained. In fact, my next read is going to be Bram Stoker's "Dracula", which I last looked at when I was about 15.

If you're neither into history nor horror but just like a good read, I still recommend this book to you because it has everything a good story should have: an engaging and down to earth style, sophisticated, intriguing characters, drama, suspense, danger, humor, lust ... plus it's a coming of age story par excellence about no less a personage than Vlad the Impaler.

The Real Dracula!!!

Well, I always thought Dracula was a blood sucking vampire and not a 15th century Romanian prince. The Dracula that I knew of was from Bram Stoker's novel and the 1992 horror movie directed and produced by Francis Ford Coppola. The movie was a hit and drastically impacted our perception of who Dracula really was. Actually, my husband knew more of the 'real' Dracula than I.

I am impressed with Mr. Foia's historical research and writing in "Dracula Chronicles: Son of the Dragon" and am anxiously awaiting the sequel. The book was very well written and caught my interest from the beginning. Once I started reading this novel, I had a hard time putting it down. It is fascinating that Mr. Foia hailed from the same area that Vlad/Dracula lived and it is no wonder that he became interested enough to write a historical novel about Dracula. Foia's novel gives much insight to the early formative years of Vlad and helps to dispel the myths set out by Bram Stoker and the movie.

Hats off to Victor Foia on this highly successful and well written book! Am anxious to read Mr. Foia's next book!

Don't Worry, Read Happy

I've never been a fan of the contemporary version of Dracula so although I've known Victor for many years, I approached this novel with some trepidation. I needn't have. This is a story that crosses many genres of literature and one that will appeal to a diverse variety of readers. Victor has taken an historical figure and wrapped him in a cloak of intrigue and conspiracy that kept me transfixed for the entire book. My only complaint; the story ended too soon and the next volume isn't out yet! C'mon Victor, get busy!
