Five Stars! A wonderful readThis story of courage and silent emotions was laughing,cheering and grab for the tissues good. it's a must have for your book shelf.
Four 1/2 Stars. Heart wrenching and beautiful....This was well written, heart wrenching and beautiful. I admit I had tears in my eyes a number of times, and I had tears streaming down my face at one stage. I read it from start to finish in one sitting because I didn't want to put it down and break the spell I was under.
From the Author
In a way, The Girl in the Window is the celebration of the life of someone I never met, but who still had a huge impact on me. According to his Facebook page, his name was Spirit Wolf Wakta. He made jewelry by hand. I don't even remember when we met, or how, but somehow we began talking. I was struggling in my writing career, not finding satisfaction with my publisher, experimenting with this new thing called Indie or Self-published writing. My writing had stalled. I had just finished the enormous task of editing one of my epic fantasies. It had taken a whole month. My husband was angry and frustrated at my fixation. I was tired, discouraged and seriously considering giving up. I didn't even have any new ideas for stories. And that terrified me. I always had new ideas, new stories churning in my brain.
Spirit Wolf and another friend I knew as Mateo kept encouraging me to chase the dream.
Then one day Spirit Wolf sent me a picture, along with his impressions of it. I hadn't asked him to do it. If it had been anyone but him, it would have annoyed me and I would have ignored it... but you see, I'd seen his work. He'd sent me one of his necklaces. Packed with it was a seashell he'd found walking along the shoreline near his home.
The picture was simple - a girl standing alone by a window with the faint impression of a horse visible through the glass. I looked at the picture, at his thoughts, and it resonated with me. I started writing. Some stories come in a great rush, some flow, and some are like pulling teeth. The Girl in the Window flowed, but not easily. The first draft was rough, but good. I struggled with including a few scenes - scenes I'd later add.
As many authors learn, I knew I had to step away from it, from the emotions that had poured out of me. So I put it away to get some distance from it.
First, though, I sent the rough draft to Spirit Wolf and Mateo.
A year went by. I thought I had all the time in the world. The truth is that I was scared. The Girl in the Window was so different from anything else I'd ever written. I can be as insecure as any other writer. But they say you should always do what scares you, so I did.
Then the news came that Spirit Wolf had died. He'd had cancer. I'd no idea, he hadn't told me. He'd probably known he was dying even as he gifted me with the inspiration for The Girl in the Window. I was out of time. It pained me to know that he'd never see his vision come to life.
Even then, I wasn't ready. As I grieved privately for the friend I had lost but had allowed to grow too distant, I still wasn't ready.
I finished the first draft of the horror novel I'd been writing - another exercise in doing things that scare you - and needed something to clear my mind, so I finally picked up The Girl in the Window once again. For some reason, it was important to me to finish it by Christmas. I didn't know why then.
Now I do.

Heart wrenching and beautiful

Josh has a habit of taking in those he feels are fragile and in need of care. His horse is damaged and he doesn't know how to help him, but he knows he must try. His new neighbour keeps to herself, yet spends time with Josh's horse and he gentles her as she does his horse.
This is the story of Josh, Beth and Fair. There are a number of wonderful secondary characters who add to the story and infuse further depth into the main characters.
This was well written, heart wrenching and beautiful. I admit I had tears in my eyes a number of times, and I had tears streaming down my face at one stage. I read it from start to finish in one sitting because I didn't want to put it down and break the spell I was under.
It wasn't perfect -- there were a few minor typos, and there were a few times where I felt things could have been elaborated further to give more insight into Beth's past and Josh's desire to fix things/people. All in all though, this was a wonderful book.

Chock full of Errors, and Painfully Predictable

It's not often I give a book a public negative review. Usually I just write off a disappointing read and move forward. However, this book had so many errors, I couldn't let it go. The old adage is that you should write what you know. The author apparently knows NOTHING about horses. She used the words "halter" and "bridle" interchangably, she can't seem to remember the sex of one of the horses from one chapter to another, and she makes reference to the primary horse having raced as a "yearling" (which doesn't happen in real life).
Was this book even edited? At one point she refers to "Matt" speaking (as in, the dead boyfriend), when she actually means "Josh" (as in, the current love interest). Sloppy mistakes like that made it difficult to finish.
Nearly every reference to Josh includes a description of his muscles (we get it, move on), and nearly every chapter begins with a fluffy description of the weather, flora, and fauna. Some variation would have been nice.
Finally, I actually laughed out loud during the scene in which Beth and Josh finally fulfill their desire and make passionate love to one another... fully nude... in the barn... during a thunderstorm... in a pile of hay. Predictability and cliche aside, I'm sorry-- that moment made it painfully clear the author has never been anywhere near hay.

The Girl in the Window - More than just a romance

I was given the pleasure of reviewing The Girl in the Window by Valerie Douglas. It's a romance--but so much more.
When a book grabs me and characters stay with me, I know I've found a book to add to the keeper shelf. The Girl in the Window is the story of Beth and Josh. But it's so much more than that. This story is about overcoming a troubled past. It's about surviving to beat the odds--it's about love and forgiveness. It's about determination.
I really enjoyed the parallels between the female protagonist, Beth, and the horse, Fair, that belonged to the male lead, Josh. It's obvious early on that Fair has been mistreated somehow--and Beth is the only one that can get near him.
Both were troubled--and Josh could tell--as he'd watched her through her window. He'd purchased Fair in the hopes that the nearly-wild horse could be trained to run in races. Everyone said it wouldn't and couldn't happen. Months of work had accomplished little--until Beth. It seemed as if Beth was the key -- almost as if the horse could relate to a kindred soul.
Josh had watched Beth interact with the horse with amazement--and knew he wanted know her, and then he just plain wanted her. When they finally meet, she isn't sure if he wants more than she's able to give.
The secondary characters added flavor to the story and were interesting as well. It's easy to give this book five stars.
The only issue I had at all is that I'd have liked to see just a bit more of Josh and Beth together--but I was done the book before I even realized that the story flowed so well, I'd reached 'the end' before it dawned on me that this book isn't really your typical romance at all. It's more a journey for all the characters involved--both human and equine.
In parts it had me near tears. Other parts had me smiling. But every page had me turning it to see what was next in their journey.
Ms. Douglas brings her story together in such a way that it's impossible to sit down. I read it in one sitting (hey, who needs sleep?) and will likely read it again.
Kudos, Ms. Douglas. I'll be looking at more of your work.
