How the Light Gets In: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel (A Chief Inspector Gamache Mystery Book 9), by Louise Penny

The #1 New York Times Bestseller

"There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in." —Leonard Cohen

Christmas is approaching, and in Québec it's a time of dazzling snowfalls, bright lights, and gatherings with friends in front of blazing hearths. But shadows are falling on the usually festive season for Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Most of his best agents have left the Homicide Department, his old friend and lieutenant Jean-Guy Beauvoir hasn't spoken to him in months, and hostile forces are lining up against him. When Gamache receives a message from Myrna Landers that a longtime friend has failed to arrive for Christmas in the village of Three Pines, he welcomes the chance to get away from the city. Mystified by Myrna's reluctance to reveal her friend's name, Gamache soon discovers the missing woman was once one of the most famous people not just in North America, but in the world, and now goes unrecognized by virtually everyone except the mad, brilliant poet Ruth Zardo.
As events come to a head, Gamache is drawn ever deeper into the world of Three Pines. Increasingly, he is not only investigating the disappearance of Myrna's friend but also seeking a safe place for himself and his still-loyal colleagues. Is there peace to be found even in Three Pines, and at what cost to Gamache and the people he holds dear?
How the Light Gets In is the ninth Chief Inspector Gamache Novel from Louise Penny.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Complex characterizations and sophisticated plotting distinguish Agatha-winner Penny's masterful ninth novel (after 2012's The Beautiful Mystery). The devastating conclusion to the previous book saw Jean-Guy Beauvoir abandon his mentor, Chief Insp. Armand Gamache of the Quebec Sûreté, and return to substance abuse. Things have never looked bleaker for the unassuming and empathic Gamache. A corrupt superior has gutted his homicide department, and the agents he now supervises treat their cases with blatant indifference. Amid all this personal and professional turmoil, Gamache lands a strange murder case. There's no obvious motive for why somebody killed elderly Constance Ouellet—the only living member of a set of quintuplets who were national celebrities in their youth—by striking her in the head with a lamp. Fair-play clues lead to a surprising solution to the murder, while Gamache's battle to save his career unfolds with subtlety and intelligence. Once again, Penny impressively balances personal courage and faith with heartbreaking choices and monstrous evil. First printing of 300,000; author tour. Agent: Patty Moosbrugger, Teresa Chris Literary Agency. (Aug.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* When we last saw Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec, he was solving the murder of a cloistered monk (The Beautiful Mystery, 2012). No problem there, but in the process, his relationship with his deputy, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, imploded, leaving Jean-Guy back on prescription drugs and in league with Gamache’s enemies within the police force. That situation has only worsened, as Gamache’s attempts to expose corruption and evil-doing at the highest levels of the force have prompted a vicious counterattack, leaving the chief inspector vulnerable professionally and personally. Into that cauldron comes a new murder case involving the death of the last surviving sister of quintuplets, whose birth and early life prompted a Canadian media frenzy in the mid-twentieth century. The dead woman has ties to a resident of Three Pines, the idyllic, off-the-grid village outside Montreal where several of Gamache’s previous adventures have been set. Penny does something very clever here, something that heightens the tension and the emotional intensity of the novel: she not only puts Gamache in harm’s way but also exposes Three Pines itself to defilement, forcing the reader to face the realization that a place too good for its time may cease to exist as we know it—a cozy setting under attack from a decidedly hard-boiled world. Penny has always used setting to support theme brilliantly, but here she outdoes herself, contrasting light and dark, innocence and experience, goodness and evil both in the emotional lives of her characters and in the way those characters leave their footprints on the landscape. Another bravura performance from an author who has reinvented the village mystery as profoundly as Dashiell Hammett transformed the detective novel. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Penny’s last novel received a 100,000-copy first printing. This one triples that, only one indication that, in Penny’s case, literary quality and commercial success are feeding one another. --Bill Ott

Review

"Penny writes with grace and intelligence about complex people struggling with complex emotions. But her great gift is her uncanny ability to describe what might seem indescribable - the play of light, the sound of celestial music, a quiet sense of peace." --"New York Times Book Review"

"Gorgeous writing...fresh and fully realized." --"The Washington Post"

"Penny, elevating herself to the pantheon that houses P.D. James, Ruth Rendell and Minette Walters, demonstrates an exquisite touch with characterization, plotting and artistic sensitivity.' --"Kirkus Reviews "(starred review)

"Like P. D. James, Penny shows how the tight structure of the classical mystery story can accommodate a wealth of deeply felt emotions and interpersonal drama....Top of the genre." --"Booklist"

"Penny proves again that she is one of our finest writers." --"People"

"Penny continues to amaze with each novel. Wrapped in exciting plots and domestic details, her characters are people we want to follow through their very real joys and sorrows." --"Cleveland Plain Dealer"

"All of Penny's talents combine to make the Gamache series worthy of the multiple awards bestowed upon it. But what lifts her work to the highest plane is the deep sense of humanity with which she invests her novels." --"Richmond Times-Dispatch"

Secrets to Die For
By L. M. Keefer
Constance Pineault is the kind of woman you hope would move to the winsome village of Three Pines. She is self-sufficient, feels motherly to bistro owners Gabri and Olivier, is friends with bookstore owner Myrna, drinks happily with mad poet Ruth, and is even considering getting a duck.

But there is a mystery about Constance. She won't let Clara paint her portrait. It is almost as if she has a secret in her past. Perhaps a big one. Perhaps a secret someone would kill for.

"Who doesn't have a secret?" asks crazy Ruth. Secrets, and the revealing of them, is Inspector Gamache's focus in this book. It seems everyone has them. There's the mysterious death of a woman by a bridge he passed - why would a young woman jump over a bridge in a cold Canadian winter Gamache wonders.

Then there's the mystery regarding Gamache's cunning supervisor, Chief Superintendent Francoeur, who is decimating Gamache's homicide department and ordering Gamache's former assistant Jean-Guy Beauvoir on dangerous raids. Is Francoeur trying to drive Gamache and Beauvoir over the edge, or is something deeper and more sinister at play?

And what about the secrets in Constance's past? The sleepy little village of Three Pines is about to have a rude awakening. Even high tech visits it in Gamache's efforts shine the light on the secrets. This is one of the most intense investigations Gamache has lead as the secrets go deeper and deeper. Will the villagers act to protect Gamache and their village from the bad guys? Will the bad guys meet their match in Ruth?

A brilliant balance between modern, big city intrigue and bucolic, small village happenings, this mystery novel is an absorbing read. Grit meets charm. There are enough clues to ferret out some of the secrets with Gamache and his team, but some secrets will probably surprise you. Intricately plotted, this mystery is complex without being confusing. Ruth's duck has never been more entertaining. You may want to send your kids to their grandparents for an overnight and tell your partner it's a good time for them to take that fishing trip, because once you start reading, you won't want to stop.

This is my favorite mystery in this series by Louise Penny so far. It is deep, witty, surprising, original, sophisticated and even a bit cinematic. Louise Penny's writing is more riveting and nuanced with each book. As to whether you will want to read this series in order, Penny herself recommends that the books are probably more enjoyable if you do read them in order to follow the arc of the story. She says she wrote them to be standalone books, also. At the end of this book, you sense Gamache will be charting some new paths for himself in a promising future. This is definitely a page-turner, and one of my favorite mystery reads I have read.

If you wish to read this series from the beginning, the books in order are:
STILL LIFE
A FATAL GRACE / DEAD COLD
THE CRUELEST MONTH
A RULE AGAINST MURDER / THE MURDER STONE
THE BRUTAL TELLING
BURY YOUR DEAD
A TRICK OF THE LIGHT
THE BEAUTIFUL MYSTERY
HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN

Blockbuster of a novel...but not one I'd recommend to newbies. Here's why:
By Sharon Isch
Canadian author Louise Penny has so far written nine stories in this series. The first four, labeled "Three Pines Mysteries," were well written, homey whodunits set in a small town in Canada and solved by Chief Inspector Gamache and his sidekick Inspector Jean-Guy Beauvoir of the Surete du Quebec. By the time Book 5, "The Brutal Telling" (often referred to as Penny's breakout novel) came out, the cover label had changed to "A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel."

Book 6, "Bury Your Dead" opens with the news that in the interim between the "Brutal" and "Bury" books, something horrendous had happened that left many of Gamache's men dead and both Gamache and Beauvoir seriously injured and emotionally ravaged. The emotional and physical impact of that tragedy will follow the two detectives relentlessly through all the Gamache novels that follow. Which is why I recommend newbies read "Bury Your Dead," "A Trick of the Light," and "The Beautiful Mystery" before tackling this one.

By the time we get to this ninth in the series, the bad apples, led by the villainous Chief Inspector Francoeur, will have taken over control of the Surete from Gamache and the good guys; the Francoeur faction will have grabbed away all of Gamache's best detectives--including Beauvoir--and are blatantly plotting to force Gamache's resignation.

While all this is going on, there's a murder to be solved. Gamache has been called to Three Pines, where Myrna, the bookstore owner, needs his help finding her missing friend Constance, who, it will turn out, was (a) murdered and (b) the last of Canada's famous Ouellet quintuplets.

In recent years I've read all the Gamache books as soon as they come out...which means there's at least a year and a good couple of dozen other novels between my last Penny novel and its successor. Till now, the author's usually been really good at reminding her readers of the back story basics. But not this time. This time she seems to think readers could just pick up where the action and characters and relationships left off a year ago and take it from there without added memory joggers. I found myself calling friends and asking, hey do you remember back in "The Beautiful Mystery" how and why Beauvoir let himself get co-opted by Francoeur and why he now has gone over to the other side and how Gamache let that happen etc.? I could be wrong here, but I think jumping into this 9th book in this exceedingly complex series, with its 400 pages and large cast of characters without having first read its three or four predecessors would be madly confusing and a real challenge.

ADDENDA 8/26/13 re the conversations here among Amazon reviewers on whether this is or is not the ending of this series: Quote from the opening paragraph of Maureen Corrigan's rave Book World review in today's Washington Post: "'How the Light Gets In' is the culmination of a story arc that has been developing over the most recent books; happily, it is not the termination of the series." Addenda 4/13/14: I just read that next in the series, due out in August '14, is "The Long Way Home," with Gamache retired and living in Three Pines.

On one hand...
By Jill Meyer
...Louise Penny's new novel, "How the Light Gets In", is probably going to make my Top 10 novels of 2013. Reading it was like listening to a beautifully-crafted work by Mozart. On the other hand, the musicians playing the Mozart and Penny in writing "Light" have struck a few slightly "off" notes. So, how do I reconcile the "off" notes to a five-star book rating? It's difficult, but I'll try.

"How the Light Gets In" is the ninth book in Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache series. I discovered the series only last year when I read the previous book "The Beautiful Mystery". I was so impressed with that book that I read six of the seven of her back-list. Most of the previous books were set in both Montreal and in the village of Three Pines, a couple of hours out of the city. A secluded place, Three Pines, sort of seems like the villages depicted in Thomas Kinkade's Christmas scenes. It looks like an ethereal place but the small village has seen its share of murders. It is Three Pines again where the majority of the action occurs in "Light". Bad things are also occurring in Montreal, where wickedness, murder, and havoc threaten to arise at any point during the story. Oh, and "venality" makes an appearance, too.

Louise Penny is an ambitious writer. Her books have a multitude of plots and characters and she juggles them both. How WELL you, the reader, feels she juggles them will determine if you enjoy this book. In "Light" she includes her Inspector Gamache and his family and aides at the Surete de Quebec, and his enemies. Also included are the townspeople of Three Pines - human and fowl - as well as a family of quintuplets, who are involved in the murder case Gamache is charged with solving.

The only problem with this book are the couple of dropped plot-points and characters. And here's why those dropped points and characters matter. IF Penny intends to continue the series, she can pick those up in her next book. But, I read and finished the book with the real feeling that this was to be the last book in the series. I can't explain why without giving a whole bunch of plot-spoilers, so I won't try.

Louise Penny's writing is so strong in this book that maybe those "off" notes and "dropped" points won't bother you. They really didn't bother me, although I obviously noticed them. So, we'll see if she returns and cleans up after "How the Light Gets In". But this is a very strong novel and one her long-time fans will enjoy. (There have been several excellent reviewers who've written that "Light" should not be read as a "stand alone" book. Believe them. You need to have read at least some in the series to understand this book.)

The Diabolist (The Dominic Grey Series), by Layton Green

"Part international thriller, part intricate, unforgettable nightmare-inducing fever dream, The Diabolist has everything you want from a thriller.  Layton Green is a master of intellectual suspense." -- J.T. Ellison, New York Times bestselling author

Globe-hopping detectives Dominic Grey and Professor Viktor Radek have a distinct specialty: they investigate matters that involve mysterious or unexplained phenomena. Crimes that other agencies can't or won't touch.

When a controversial religious leader is immolated in the Mission District of San Francisco, the local police chalk it up to a bizarre suicide. Yet witnesses claim a mysterious robed figure set fire to the priest. When a cult leader in Paris dies under similar circumstances, Interpol asks Grey and Viktor for help.
Convinced the culprit is a charismatic New Age prophet who has become an Internet sensation, Grey and Viktor undergo a perilous journey into the world of the occult as they try to penetrate the prophet's inner circle. Along the way, they realize the prophet has ties to Viktor's past, and that a far more sinister plan is afoot--a plan that, if successful, will shake the world to its core.

From the catacombs of Paris to London's nefarious East End, from the haunted walls of York to a lost fortress in the Sicilian wilderness, Viktor and Grey's latest case plunges them into a vortex of modern-day black magic, ancient heresies, and the most dangerous place of all: the cobwebbed corners of their own pasts.

From Booklist
Dominic Grey and Viktor Radek aren’t your typical private eyes. They specialize in mysteries involving religious cults. Here, Interpol comes calling with a case: in Paris and San Francisco, leaders of satanic cults have been murdered. Grey and Radek soon zero in on Simon Azar, leader of the Order of New Enlightenment, a new and increasingly influential cult supposedly based in London, but Azar seems to be keeping a lot of details about the cult secret (including the location of its new headquarters), and it’s difficult to nail Azar for the murders—even when Grey’s and Radek’s own lives become seriously in jeopardy. This, the third Grey-Radek novel, is a well-crafted and exciting thriller with a pair of interesting protagonists (Grey, the ex-Marine and juju master; Radek, the expert in cults and religious phenomenology) and a charismatic villain who makes our skin crawl.

Devil of a good tale
By Quixote010
On the back of The Diabolist, an astute publisher has written: "Fans of Dan Brown, Douglas Preston, James Rollins Steve Berry and the X-Files will delight in this gripping thriller. A+ for the writer.

The Diabolist is the first Dominic Grey book I have read, and I'm now searching the library for more. Author Layton Green's character of Viktor Radek, a near 7 foot professor of Religion Phenomenology has many similarities to Douglas Preston's Aloysius Pendergast...both are connected to law agencies (Pendergast the FBI and Radek, Interpol), both dress in black, both are independently wealthy, both have international connections, and each ascribes to finding logical answers to seemingly supernatural events.

Like Dan Brown, Green immerses his tale in religious events and Biblical prophesy. Radek is considered the world's "foremost investigator of cults" and this particular tale involves him in determining the truth behind the demise of numerous evil worshiping factions. As a student, Radek dabbled in the cult worship of evil, and now he is concerned that a former friend may be involved in bringing ancient Satanism back,

Dominic Grey reminds us Steve Berry's Cotton Malone on steroids. A jiu jitsu expert, Grey is a former special operative who now works as Radek's partner in solving crime.

Besides having the best of qualities of the writers mentioned, Green's The Diabolist comes across as a "smart" novel. The events and actions are based on logical events, and the author does a great job of moving you from scene to scene without reaching into the absurd. Radek has his own demands and failures, and they meld into the tale flawlessly. Green's inclusion of religious events and biblical references is outstanding.

If you are into historically-related mysteries with strong characters and a plot that is more cerebral that continuous action, then I think you will like this one.

A dark, intelligent, spellbinding novel
By Bob Milne
For this third book in The Dominic Grey Series and his first with the Thomas & Mercer imprint, Layton Green kicks things up a notch and delivers a novel that should, if there's any justice to be found upon the shelves, make him a household name. The Diabolist is a dark, intelligent, spellbinding novel that is destined to appeal to readers of Preston & Child, David Gibbins, and Dan Brown . . . as well as the likes of Peter Straub, John Saul, and James Herbert.

This is a novel about two things - the nature of belief, and the dichotomy of good versus evil. Yes, it's a rip-roaring, pulse-pounding adventure, but it's also an intelligent, deeply philosophical look at the concept of evil, and how it's defined (or justified) within the bounds of faith and belief. It all begins with the mysterious deaths of two prominent religious figures, one of the House of Lucifer and the other of the Church of the Beast, both condemned as heretics. I won't attempt to summarize the details that Layton provides in the course of the novel, but it turns out the public perception of a 'Satanist' is just as troubled and diverse as that of a 'Christian' faith.

At the same time, a charismatic leader by the name of Simon Azar has begun making a name for himself, amassing over a million followers for his Order of New Enlightenment. It's a very attractive, very seductive sort of humanist religion, one that celebrates the natural enjoyment of life in all its forms, all without guilt or shame. It's an intelligent form of belief, and one that's easy to see the appeal of, but there's something suspicious at its heart.

Enter our heroes, Dominic Grey and Viktor Radek, working on behalf of Interpol to solve the murders and prevent the death of more . . . including the Pope.

Readers who are already familiar with the series will appreciate the opportunity to delve into Viktor's surprisingly dark past, to learn what made him into the expert on cults and religious phenomenologist he is today. There's a very good reason he so often loses himself to the oblivion of Absinthe, and an equally good reason he is so good at what he does. New readers need not fear, for Dominic's past is recapped nicely in bits and pieces throughout the book, providing them with enough of an introduction to enjoy the story.

The incredible action sequences of the first two books, with Dominic's unique brand of hand-to-hand combat have been perfected here, providing more than a few heart-stopping moments of action and drama. The blood and the gore are here again as well in all their lurid detail, but necessary to the plot, and never used for mere effect. The drama and the suspense are at an all-time high for the series as well, particularly once Viktor receives one of the mysterious letters promising his own death.

Like the first two books of the series, Green deftly balances faith, belief, science, and reason throughout the tale. The question of the supernatural is just that - a question - one that is wisely left somewhat opened ended, with just enough room for readers to believe there's more to life than Viktor and Dominic can explain. It's not a cop-out or a soft ending by any stretch of the imagination. This is an intelligent read that rewards, rather than dismisses, our intelligence in tying up the loose ends. It's just that Green is smart enough to leave a few unanswered questions, a few events that we are free to either believe haven't been explained yet, or simply cannot be explained.

I cannot recommend this one highly enough. If you're new to the series, dive in and enjoy a read that will stimulate all your senses. You'll feel smarter for having read it, I guarantee, but you'll also enjoy every moment.

Thinking person's occult thriller
By John R.
In the Diabolist, the third novel in the Dominic Grey series, Layton Green has forged a well-crafted, thinking person's occult thriller. From New York to San Fran, from Paris to London, Layton takes us with his characters on a heart-pounding race to defeat the forces of an ancient religion, which may not have the best intentions for its followers.

I was introduced to the Dominic Grey series by a friend when the first book in the series, the Summoner, came out. While an excellent first novel, Layton Green is now really hitting his stride with this most recent novel, the Diabolist.

The Diabolist, which is not for the faint of heart, is a fast paced occult thriller. The Diabolist is more than just an airplane novel, a thrilling page turner that makes you think. Layton's intense narration keeps you on your toes and wondering what's around the next bend. Layton is an excellent storyteller with the ability to provide a strong story line, and you can see from this novel that Layton has really worked hard to develop the characters. The main characters of this story aren't superheroes, they are flawed just as we are as readers. Layton shows their flaws in a way that, ultimately, we as readers can relate to.

It is clear that Layton does a great amount of research in both the story topics and locations. Layton picks us up and puts us in the setting. In London we can feel the chill in the air, in Paris we can see the macabre setting in the catacoms. And like most readers, I know little about Satanism and related cults, but Layton quickly brings us up to speed without sounding like he is lecturing. For better or worse, he brings this eerie subject to life.

The Diabolist is a fun novel that you will want to read during the day. On the beach. So you know that you are safe! I look forward to great things to come with this series.

A New Language, A New World: Italian Immigrants in the United States, 1890-1945 (Statue of Liberty Ellis Island), by Nancy C. Carnevale

An examination of Italian immigrants and their children in the early twentieth century, A New Language, A New World is the first full-length historical case study of one immigrant group's experience with language in America. Incorporating the interdisciplinary literature on language within a historical framework, Nancy C. Carnevale illustrates the complexity of the topic of language in American immigrant life. By looking at language from the perspectives of both immigrants and the dominant culture as well as their interaction, this book reveals the role of language in the formation of ethnic identity and the often coercive context within which immigrants must negotiate this process.

Review
"Outstanding from start to finish. . . . The author displays exceptional range and depth in exploring not only the interior world of Italian American life, but also the intersections of this group's story with that of other immigrant communities and with society as a whole. . . . Highly recommended."--Choice

"A must for Italian American scholars."--Altreitalie

"Carnevale takes a fresh and intriguing approach by focusing on an issue to which historians have devoted surprisingly little attention."--Journal of American Ethnic History
