About the Author
Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970) is a prolific American author best known for his works centered on the lawyer-detective Perry Mason. At the time of his death in March of 1970, in Ventura, California, Gardner was "the most widely read of all American writers" and "the most widely translated author in the world," according to social historian Russell Nye. The first Perry Mason novel, The Case of The Velvet Claws, published in 1933, had sold twenty-eight million copies in its first fifteen years. In the mid-1950s, the Perry Mason novels were selling at the rate of twenty thousand copies a day. There have been six motion pictures based on his work and the hugely popular Perry Mason television series starring Raymond Burr, which aired for nine years and 271 episodes.
As author William F. Nolan notes, "Gardner, more than any other writer, popularized the law profession for a mass-market audience, melding fact and fiction to achieve a unique blend; no one ever handled courtroom drama better than he did."
Richard Senate further sums up the significance of Gardner?s contribution: "Although the character of Perry Mason is not unique as a 'lawyer-sleuth,' he is the first to come to anyone's mind when it comes to sheer brilliance in solving courtroom-detective cases by rather unconventional means. Besides 'Tarzan,' 'Sherlock Holmes,' 'Superman' ? 'Perry Mason' qualifies as an American icon of popular culture in the twentieth century."
Gardner's writing has touched a lot of people including a number of high profile figures. Brian Kelleher and Diana Merrill say in their 1987 book, The Perry Mason TV Show Book that Harry S. Truman was a fan and that it is rumored that when Einstein died, a Perry Mason book was at his bedside. They further describe that when Raymond Burr met Pope John XXIII, the actor reported that the pontiff "seemed to know all about Perry Mason." Federal judge Sonya Sotomayor frequently mentions how Perry Mason was one of her earliest influences.
Starting with his first book, Gardner had a very definite vision of the shape the Perry Mason character would take:
"I want to make my hero a fighter," he wrote to his publisher, "not by having him be ruthless to women and underlings, but by creating a character who, with infinite patience jockeys his enemies into a position where he can deliver one good knockout punch."

Fun but somewhat flawed Mason mystery

I'm a big fan of Gardner's Perry Mason mysteries, as I was of the TV show that ran from 1957 to 1966. Gardner was a lawyer and he gets his law correct his novels. It's nice to not have to roll your eyes as legal tactics pass before them, as often happens with current TV "law shows".
There is a lot of fun in this book. Once this case gets to the preliminary hearing, the byplay between Mason, the judge, and the ADA is at times literally hilarious.
I dock this mystery a star because unlike most Perry Mason mysteries, there is VERY LITTLE chance you will solve this one from the clues. I thought the murderer and the motive were somewhat out of left field. While the clues cited in the solution were indeed present in the novel, they don't really match up as forcefully as the solutions to most Mason mysteries.
Still, the book is a LOT of fun. I don't regret the time spent with it at all, despite not getting to pad my resume of successful solves. ;-)

Found Innocent in the Last Chapter

The Case of the Reluctant Model, by Erle Stanley Gardner
The 'Foreword' is dedicated to Judge James M. Carter of the US District Court in San Diego, an outstanding humanitarian. Judge Carter referred a case to Erle Stanley Gardner, who referred it to medical examiners. There was a mistaken assumption on the part of the pathologist who never saw the victim of a drunken quarrel who had probably died a natural death.
Art dealer Lattimer Rankin visits Perry Mason, and wants to sue a rival for slander because the rival hinted the art dealer sold an imitation. Perry explains why this would be a mistake; instead let the owner of this picture sue for disparaging its value. This chapter explains how a suit is useful for publicity. Chapter 2 explains why you should be careful in making comments in public (even if you won't be sued in court). Perry and Della attend the press conference on Otto Olney's yacht (he bought the painting in question). Afterwards they have dinner and dance the Twist (Chapter 4). They are approached by Collin Durant, the art dealer said to have questioned the authenticity of Olney's painting, but shoo him away. But something about this doesn't seem right to Perry (Chapter 5). Maxine Lindsay, the witness in the suit, calls Perry to tell him that she has to leave on an urgent personal matter. Maxine gives Della a key to her apartment so her canary can be fed. When Perry and Della show up at her apartment the next morning, they find a dead body but no canary! Perry finds where Maxine went, and meets her to talk, just before Lt. Tragg arrives to question her. The murder weapon was owned by Maxine.
Paul Drake discovers that Collin Durant ran up big bills at an art supply shop - for an artist who was a talented copyist. One of the copies was of that disputed painting. The mystery is where Durant got his thousands in one-hundred dollar bills. Only a bank would have this denomination.
Chapter 14 begins the preliminary hearing of the State of California versus Maxine Lindsay. The ballistics expert testifies that Maxine's revolver fired the fatal shots. In Chapter 16 Perry Mason elicits important information from a resident at Maxine's apartment house: she only saw someone wearing a baggy tweed coat from the back. Perry Mason takes a calculated risk: he calls the defendant to the witness stand. Maxine tells what happened that night: Durant came over about 6pm and told her to get out of town fast, and she did so because he had some hold on her. Perry Mason now has a bombshell to explode on the prosecution's case (time of use of the locker). But now a witness comes to visit Perry Mason. This talk leads to new evidence and the solution of the crime. Perry's defendant is cleared. [But the ending seems a little forced to me.]
