Gripping, Gritty, and Riveting!

This is one of the best novels I've read in a while. At first, we are sympathetic to Derek and the situation in which he finds himself. Then we begin to wonder. Then we are taken on a psychological ride as the author unfolds this story to us through Derek's thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It is skillfully written, and not a line is wasted in this book.
The supporting characters are not particularly well-developed. While this could be seen as a shortcoming in the book, critics need to remember that we are seeing the world through Derek's experiences, and he can no longer recognize faces. The reader gets what he gets as he's seeing and experiencing it, so the lack of developed characterization leaves us with the slight discord that this main character experiences all the time. Instead of being a weakness, it helps us inhabit Derek's unsure world more fully.
The description states this is a thriller about a crazed stalker. That is part of the book, but it doesn't give the full strength of this story. While the stalker is a significant part of the plot, this novel is also about a person learning to look in the mirror and come to terms with himself. This is a powerful story that brings to the fore all the shades of grey of a world that cannot be tidily summed up into black and white.

A different, cerebral read

Derek is afflicted with a condition called "face blindness." If someone is stalking him and wants to do him harm, will Derec recognize that person? And how? I think there's a subtle allegory that is running through this storyline - can we, any of us, really, recognize the face of an enemy even if we see it?
The premise is of the book is very good in that it allows for much speculative symbolism is open to interpretation by the reader. The somewhat similar approach was implemented in "The Demolished Man" by Alfred Bester, only with "face blindness" appearing in the dream sequences.
There's a reality that has been built up here through the eyes and perception of a man for whom one face looks exactly like the other. Or perhaps Derec's world is actually falling apart around him - he goes from a sympathetic character in the beginning of the story to a hard-to-relate personage. Either way, the character progression of the main protagonist and the subtle changes of his relationship to the world are interesting to observe.
The author puts effort in crafting the sentences and dialogs, presenting by witty, if somewhat slow moving word pictures:
I am disassociated somehow, just a child's toy with a crank on my back; wind me up and send me whirring inside.
He presents a photo of a stained glass window. A bearded man and a sheep. Definitely something religious, probably Christian. Catholic? "I don't know. Could be any of a dozen saints, I never really kept up with that."
"It's Jesus. Jesus!"
"Where's the cross? C'mon, that's a bad shot of him."
A policeman in a dark blue uniform steps through, handcuffs rattling as he walks. Broad shoulders, proud stance. Grim expression.
The narrative is written in first person present tense. With concentration on the inner thoughts of the character, this book is an example of what is loosely termed "Literary Fiction." It does give the reader a sense of moving forward constantly; however, the perceived unrelenting high tension of such a style does take a tall - I wish there were some scenes of relative normalcy that would allow us to to take a break and to contrast the ongoing narrative for a better appreciation of the way it is presented here.
All in all, this is a well written novel that can mean different things to different people. My personal high-brow criticisms are just that, personal. Good book, if you are looking for a different and cerebral read.

You will be inside Derek's head from the first page.

And Derek's head tunes in the world skewed off the center signal. The novel deals with memory, perception, alcoholism and crime. So do a lot of other novels. What sets "The Blue" apart is the first person narrative. Derek is a fully realized individual who after a car accident has little memory and suffers face blindness where he cannot recognize faces and can't tell his doctors apart, nor recognize his parents. He has people who want to kill him - the brother of a family killed in the car accident, where Derek may have been drunk. Someone is stalking him and even if he sees the stalker up close he can't recognize him. His father pays for an expert witness at his trial who may try to lie Derek's way to freedom. Even though Derek is not entirely likable, he does have a moral center to which he tries to cling. All of these characters float in and out like people in dreams. The feeling is claustrophobic. All cylinders work here in a character based novel that mixes popular themes in the right doses. PKD can rest easy novels like this carry his favorite themes forward.
