FAll in love with The Falls

Whole series review, not just one book. Be warned when you pick up book one (and do start at the beginning) THE FALLS: IN THE DEAD OF WINTER, these books are like crack. You will be addicted. When I started reading, it was curiosity, I did not expect a lot to come of it. But I was hooked. I don’t like to compare to another series but there is a resemblance to Murder She Wrote in the sense of the whole New England feel. Although Vermont in this case, not Maine. But it is so much more. In Murder She Wrote and in most cozy series, you have a protagonist and a very small cast of recurring characters. The protagonist has a new friend or acquaintance in every book to move the story along and have the needed crime. In The Falls you have an entire town. (It takes a village.) A far better comparison would be James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small books which were on the surface stories about animals but in reality the overall theme of his stories was Yorkshire country life. So here while the stories may be mysteries, they are really the stories of a town full of people in the Green Mountains of Vermont. There will be new arrivals but for the most part, they are not just plot devices. They stay. They may be just a pleasant diversion in one book but may become a major player several books on. And while Sheriff Cash Greene might be considered the protagonist along with deputies Ericka Yamato and Horace Perkins, they are by no means the most important characters in the books. This is truly an ensemble cast – every citizen (2642 of them) is equally important. People go on with their lives around the mystery. Just like real life. The way scenes cut in and out is like a very well written soap opera. I guarantee, you are going to fall in love with THE FALLS.

This whole series is amazing. I want to move there and meet all these wonderful people for myself. You fall in love with the town and root for the people. I enjoy these cozy small town mystery series.

Action packed new age twaddle

The Tesla Secret is a strange book. It started off with some exciting action, the attempted assassination of the protagonists. Good, I thought, this will be a rollicking action thriller. Then things started getting strange. The bad guy, named Foxworth, was described as a media mogul living in the UK. This character has a more than superficial similarity of a certain real life media mogul (hint FOXworth). OK, some blatant anti-conservative blather, I can ignore that. Then, in a couple of places, the author gives dates as CE. For those not familiar with CE, it is exactly the same as AD, except is is supposed to be less insulting to non-European cultures than the obviously Christian-centric AD. It is only used by hyper PC academic types and is a sure sign of cultural relativism and low intellectual integrity. But back to the action, which is plentiful. Of course the action is hung on a plot and there things really get weird (spoiler alert).

It turns out that the bad guys, an evil organization (aren't they all) led by the aforementioned Foxworth, is trying to build a weapon designed by Nikola Tesla (yes, the dead Croatian inventor). Now I have no problems with this sort of thing, after all Clive Cussler has been turning the recovery of weird ancient artifacts into action adventure gold for half a century or more. But there is more. The team of good guys & gals soon needs to recover an ancient manuscript from a museum which turns out to be made of bark inscribed with ancient mesoamerian markings. This leads them to the Yucatan and an undiscovered pyramid where they have a shoot out and a bit of interpersonal crisis. You see Nick forgot to pack the bullet proof vests leading to his main squeeze Selena getting shot. She blames him for her wounding, pretty much putting the kibosh on their bedroom antics for the rest of the book. Question: how does a team of highly trained special operators not notice they have forgotten their vests? It's not like bullet proof vests are small articles that one doesn't notice until needed. This is only one in a series of operational and equipment based faux pas in the story. In another place the author states that the AN-94 assault rifle shoots two rounds at once--nothing without two or more barrels can fire more than a single round at once. What the AN-94 has is a two round burst mode that fires successive shots with an effective cyclic rate of 1800 rounds per minute. The author was a Marines, and a Marine should know better. He is also a shrink, which is probably why the relationship between Nick and Selena is so messed up.

From here things just get weirder. It turns out that Nick has psychic visions, glimpses of the future. Not only that, but the bad guys made off with the item that old Tesla was looking for, a crystal amplifier not of this world--space aliens anyone? It seems that this crystal is the heart of an amplifier that taps into Telluric current to provide unlimited energy! Telluric current is real, it has been known for more than 100 years. If it could yield usable amounts of power cities around the world would be powered by it. Instead, it has been co-opted by the fringe science and flying saucer crowed and blended with the mystic lay lines so popular with new age nut jobs. Instead of a decent action adventure tale the book is actually a new age, ancient aliens, mystic power driven piece of PC liberal progressive propaganda. Any one of these literary gimmicks would have been fine on their own, but all mixed in together they totally destroy any possible suspension of disbelief, at least for me. After such a promising start it actually makes me angry that this book devolved into twaddle. Thank goodness I got it for free.

There are some books that you just can't put down and this is one of them. The story takes off at a fast pace and the momentum just keeps mounting. The central characters are well drawn, easy to empathize with and they have good, believable dialogue.
I enjoyed the descriptive passages which place you in the story without slowing it down in anyway. There is literally never a dull moment, I was kept wondering what was going to happen next as I was caught up in the twists and turns of a masterly crafted plot. I wish I'd read the others from the beginning of the series. Although, this works extremely well as a standalone book. I don't want to spoilt it for the reader by giving away too much of the plot, but it has obviously been very well researched and carefully thought out. I shall definitely be reading more of this author's books. This one is a five star bargain!
