Short, but unnecessary

"The Other Side" is a short and mostly unnecessary transition between Chevy Stevens' novels 'Never Knowing' and 'Always Watching.' It introduces Nadine Lavoie, the mostly-silent therapist from Stevens' first two books and the narrator of the third, as a character and tells a quick side story about one of the police officers who featured prominently in 'Never Knowing.'

Taken in itself, apart from the books, "The Other Side" is not much to speak of - a story of a childhood trauma that seems resolved too quickly, too easily. As a bridge between two larger stories it mostly works, but don't expect to get much out of it on its own.

Too Short

If you like Chevy Stevens, you need to read this. It's a quick read about the female officer from Never Knowing. It was just enough to get me excited for her new book. I gave it 4 stars because I don't think it stands alone, and it's so short. It's a little tease, which would be OK, if she did stuff like this more often.

Finished this in about 20 minutes - seems like more of a book outline than even a well developed short story. Half the pages in the download are a preview of her new book. Love her novels, but as I said, don't waste even $1.00 on this read. The Other Side? It's a loser.

Revisit these American classics for the first time

If you're like me, you basically know these stories from the many retellings of them in various media, but never actually got around to reading the originals written by Washington Irving. I finally did, and found it well worth doing. Irving is a fine writer, and puts in many details that make these stories much more vivid than in any other version I've heard and bring them to life. They also give fascinating glimpses into early American life, as when Rip Van Winkle declares his allegiance to King George and is nearly strung up by an angry mob. There is a reason these stories have become iconic, and that is because the originals drew these characters and their tales so brilliantly, much more so than any of the second-hand (and usually second-rate) versions.

A classic treat for children of literature.

Washington Irving's (1783-1859) claim to fame is as a pioneer of American fiction, and he is widely recognized as the "father of American literature." The book that especially propelled him to fame was "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent." which contained his two most famous fantasy stories - "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" - both of which are contained in this collection.
But it is not merely his ground-breaking efforts that garnered him literary recognition, because Irving's stories are at the same time characterized by charming and colourful prose befitting a skilled writer. The two stories in this collection (the "Dover Thrift" edition) are his two most famous stories and are an excellent sampling of his craft. It's not always easy reading - in fact these stories would be too dense even for most older children. His vocabulary is extensive, and sentences structure verbose and lengthy - a style rather unlike that employed by contemporary writers. But despite this, Irving demonstrates a wonderful command of the English language, and has the ability to create a vivid picture of his setting, characters and events. Particularly delightful is the attention he devotes to describing his characters. And yet his stories are far from mere character portraits - they are exciting and enchanting tales that make the reader eager to find out the outcome.
"Rip Van Winkle" has gained the status of a classic, and is familiar to most children, but likely few have read Irving's original. It breathes an authenticity and air not found in the contemporary abridged versions of the story. Irving presents his tale as the alleged discovered manuscript (complete with postscript) of the late Diedrich Knickerbocker. The delightful story of Rip Van Winkle - who fell asleep in the Catskill mountains after drinking a mysterious brew acquired from some strange little men, and then awoke 20 years later - will continue to please readers old and new. In the course of the story, Irving makes a profound social comment about the changes happening in his America.
"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is renowned for its chilling tale of the Headless Horseman, and is a Halloween favorite. Actually, however, it is much more than that. It is not so much a spooky tale of a legendary village ghost as it is a colourful tale about two rival suitors. Ichabod Crane is a simple school teacher who is in love with Katrina Van Tassel, and equally in love with the estates of her father, a wealthy Dutch farmer. His counter-part is the powerful local hero Bram Bones, whose affections for Katrina mirror those of Ichabod Crane, and who is determined to put an end to the affections of underdog Crane by a mysterious and elaborate trickery. As is evident also in his other stories, it is particularly fascinating how Irving exploits the supernatural superstitions of the popular mind to create a sense of mystery and fear, but himself gives a naturalist explanation that rises above such popular notions by explaining the supernatural with natural events.
Readers used to the easy diet of modern fiction will find the pioneering work of Washington Irving rather tough to chew on. But those who delight in tasting words, biting on imaginative characters and settings, with a few sips of suspense and supernatural in the process, will discover that Washington Irving's stories are just the literary serving they are renowned to be: a classic. Irving won't please all children of the modern era. But children of literature who have acquired a fine literary taste will find that despite the heightened language of his time, Irving is still digestible and enjoyable.

Two Classic American Revolution Era Stories @ a BARGAIN $$

First off, this review is of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle" published by Dover Children's Thrift Classics, $.... While most reviews might concentrate on the merits of the stories themselves, this review is meant to support the benefits of purchasing this particular edition over others.
That said, the first thing I would like to comment on is the price. You can't ask for more of a bargain that to pay less than a ... of America's most popular and well known Revolutionary War era stories. Great for anyone on a budget, or parents who want to expand their child's library but don't want to break the bank on something they may only read once. ....
Secondly, I would like to mention that this book contains BOTH "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" AND "Rip Van Winkle" in their respective unabridged entirety. Both are relatively short, entertaining, and easy-to-read stories that supply a great introduction to period literature, beliefs, and storytelling for children and adults alike. While these are not Washington Irving's only writings, they are perhaps the most well-known.
As a former teacher, I have the following suggestion: If you live in the New York metro area, this book would be an excellent jumping off point for a trip to Washington Irving's homestead, "Sunnyside", in Tarrytown, NY, for which you can find plenty of information online. There are several other "living history" sites in the area as well.

YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!!

Oh my Sarra Cannon you wrote a wonderful ending for your amazing
series! Harper and Jackson continue their decision to fight
the Order~the only thing is deciding what to do and who it
may destroy....Can Harper really trust what she see's or should she trust
the only thing she has always depended on~Herself......
Can Jackson help Harper free his brother or will it cost everyone
their lives including their own?

Ending the series brought sadness to me but I will FOREVER have the
series to read over as many times as I want....Sarra Cannon
is a gifted author who writes with such intensity that she holds your
attention until the final end.....She is an author to watch!

Demons Forever........

I got the first of this series for free at Amazon, loved it and bought the rest that was out at the time. I loved them all so much I could hardly wait for this one to hit the stores! I finished reading it in record time and loved it just as much as the others in this series.. I just wish there were more of these books..... I highly recommend these to anyone that loves reading as much as I do.....

I am sad to see it end but

This is the final book in this series. I am sad to see it end but, wow did this book pack a punch! Full of action, heartache and life changing decisions. Harper finally gets to meet and spend time with her Father and within minutes of getting to the castle they are attacked. Harper's life is going in a downward spiral unless decisions are made. She has to choose between the safety of the Dome or helping the enslaved demons and innocent humans in Peachville. There are a lot of discussions about how this will be done.

We finally get to find out who Harper's sister is!! Priestess Winters is also a lot crazier and heartless then I thought. So many answers come to light during Demons Forever. A lot of it is kind of shocking. I didn't see it coming. Such great writing in order to put it all together! Harper needs to deal with her enemies otherwise her and her loved ones will never be safe. Will Harper survive the biggest battle of her life? Can she learn to wield her demon and witch magic? Will her and her friends survive?

Jackson remains the loyal loving boyfriend. He is there for Harper and helps her when she needs it the most. I felt kind of bad for Harper when he was talk about Lea but, I think he was just being nice. He and Harper are perfect for each other. They will give their lives for each other. Will they end up happy and together forever? You will have to read and wait for Jackson's drawing!

The other characters are great! I loved Mary Anne and Essex are great! They were their for Harper when she truly needed them. We also get to see a bit of Zara and Lark again. I really enjoyed Harper's Father too. He had a lot on his plate but, in the end did what he thought was right.

These books have been an amazing ride. I am so sad that the series is over. It is one of my favorites. I recommend you pick this one up!!

A personalised adventure for kids (and interested adults!)

There is one word for this highly original book. Fun! I'm years away from childhood but I so enjoyed playing this game. At the end of each short chapter the reader is given two options. Choose one and off you go, on your own special adventure, making choices all the way. I went back and tried out everything. At least I THINK I tried all the options. 'Once upon an Island' is full of surprises, none of which I'm going to reveal. I might just mention the rock ..... no, no, I musn't, you'll have to find out for yourself. I did laugh at what happens if you choose not to go to the island. And if you didn't get into the boat... oops no, I don't want to spoil the fun.

This would be an ideal book to keep kids happy on a long journey, or if they have to rest in bed or at any time! D.M. Potter must have worked incredibly hard to create this magical maze of stories. Everything flows easily from one exciting event to the next. Highly recommended.

A book that makes the most of what your kindle can do. The story becomes readers own as they make choices which progress the story . There is also a chance to return and make different choices when the first reading is finished. Innovative, imaginative and well written.

Another Fun D M Potter Book

My slugs and I had previously read D M Potter's In the Magician's House and Once Upon an Island follows the same formula of interactivity. This is fun, intriguing and with a little bit of history and geography about New Zealand thrown in too - not so much that my brain might explode. Unlike last time with In the Magician's House I actually made it to the end and got to meet a certain Captain and then was able to decide my own fate. I think children will love it, my slugs did, and I can recommend it if you're looking for something a little different and challenging for your 7 - 11 year olds.
