About the Author

Michael Sullivan, III is a full-time professor of mathematics at Joliet Jr. College. His training is in mathematics, statistics, and economics and he has more than 18 years experience as an instructor. His publications with Pearson cover developmental math, precalculus, and introductory statistics. Most recently, Mike has been highly involved in Course Redesign at Joliet Junior College. His experience in course redesign and writing texts for the college-level math and statistics courses gives him a unique insight into where students are headed after the developmental math track, and what they need to do to be successful. Mike is the father of three children and an avid golfer.

Katherine Struve is a full-time instructor with Columbus State Community College and has more than 30 years experience in the classroom. She is in tune with the challenges of teaching mathematics at a large, urban community college. She has served as the Lead Instructor of Developmental Mathematics and has been involved in the recent course redesign effort at Columbus State.

 

Janet Mazzarella is a full-time instructor at Southwestern College and has more than 18 years experience teaching a wide range of courses from arithmetic through calculus. She helped develop the self-paced developmental math program and spent two years serving as its director. Along with Mike and Kathy, Janet has also been active in the course redesign initiative at her institution.

A Magical Experience

We all know and love the land of Oz. It is a hard thing to forget. We also for the most part do not like change. But change is good and important if we have any hope of growing into this vast world that we have inherited.
I may be biased because I have a great love for the writing of Orson Scott Card but I highly enjoyed this story. It was a tale of childhood and friendship and most importantly love. It taught that sometimes others need what you want more than you do and it is not right to keep such things to yourself.
This story had a very powerful message and I recommend it to all readers, young and old.

L. Frank Baum's son has an adventure

This 29-page short story by Orson Scott Card is one of the better pieces in the Oz Reimagined: New Tales from the Emerald City and Beyond collection. In search of her mother's stolen wedding ring, 9-year-old Dotty takes L. Frank Baum's 6-year-old son on a fantastic journey to the Empire of the Air, a place much less grand than Oz but still reminiscent of that land. The story subtly hints that this experience was the seed for Baum's books. It's a sweet little story, written in a style similar to Card's "Seventh Son (Tales of Alvin Maker, Book 1)."

A fun explanation of how Baum discovered Oz

This short story is classic Orson Scott Card. I immediately felt like I knew the characters, thanks to Card's usual "show not tell" approach to characterization, and the story moved along quickly and ended much too soon (in my opinion). I'll admit it - I'm not really a fan of The Wizard of Oz. I was afraid this would be a rehash of part of the story from the movie. But I was pleasantly surprised to find an altogether different kind of story that reminded me of the author's older short stories.

Recommended for sure.

This book makes me beam with pride to be an Oklahoman! It is filled with relevant facts from what a sooner really is, the oklahoma city bombing, sooner and cowboy football, famous Oklahomans and much more. It I have bought several copies as gifts. It also has trivia questions in the back that follow along with the book; it would make a great educational tool. I highly recommend this to any Oklahoman!
