More than 170,000 British prisoners of war were taken by German and Italian forces during World War II, enough men to populate modern-day St Lucia. Most were captured in a string of defeats in France, North Africa and the Balkans between 1940 and 1942. They were held in a network of POW camps stretching from Nazi-occupied Poland to Italy. On the whole, the Germans and Italians treated their British prisoners properly, but the rules of the Geneva Convention, set up to govern how POWs should be treated under law, was not always followed and some camps were more hospitable than others.By far the most harmful aspects of incarceration were physical debilitation caused by chronic food shortages, and boredom. Food scarcity was a problem across the board but, to some extent, this could be addressed by the Red Cross, who regularly sent food parcels to men in prison camps. Boredom, however, was a killer. Many prisoners had suddenly gone from being busily engaged in high-adrenalin combat situations to a prison camp, where their identity was stripped away and every aspect of their lives taken out of their control. A small proportion were driven mad. Others became hell-bent on escape.
Hollywood Myth
Hollywood has led us to believe that all our POWs were impassioned escapers. That is utterly untrue. The vast majority of prisoners were too physically weak, through meagre food rations and gruelling hard work, even to contemplate escape. They had already given everything they had to the war effort, and enough was enough. They figured that, if they could sit out the rest of the war in prison, keep their noses clean and their heads down, they may be lucky enough to see their families again. Escape, on the other hand, was a highly dangerous undertaking. Very few successfully made it out of the camp and those who did ran a very real risk of being shot on sight. Often it involved months of hard work followed by long, gruelling journeys through enemy territory with very little or no food. Many who eventually reached a neutral border were so exhausted by the time they got there that they lost concentration and wandered straight back into enemy hands.

The Value Of This Book Escapes Me

Prison camp escapes are some of the most interesting and spellbinding tales of WWII. Everyone knows the saga of the Great Escape, even though the movie version is somewhat fictionalized. Still, there were other escape, equally daring and ingenious. This book attempts to chronicle some of the more interesting.

* Freya Hardy writes in a lively and upbeat style, and the book is easy to read.

* The book captures a number of incidents, including breakouts from "escape proof" Colditz and the saga of the Great Escape. Along the way we meet a few of the main characters, and get a brief glimpse into their motivations.

=== The Not-So-Good Stuff===

* The book is very short. The print edition is listed at about 100 pages, and it only took an hour or two to read. The book is very short on detail, and there is no in-depth analysis or discussion of anything. There is no technical discussion of what it took to dig a tunnel, how fake documents were created, or how prisoners managed to stockpile food and money before their escapes.

* Likewise, there is no analysis or discussion of how successful prison escapees were in their stated attempts to tie up German resources, or to "drive the Germans nuts".

* There are no references, notes or any indication of sources. It is unclear if the author is relating first or second person accounts, repeating tales heard at the local VFW, or summarizing other published works.

===Summary===

Unless you are somehow determined to read every book on the subject, I'd say this is a title to skip. It is a pleasant enough read, but just does not go deep enough into the subject, or cover enough ground to be interesting. If you want to read a more interesting first person account of life and escapes in a German POW camp, I'd recommend Under the Wire: The bestselling memoir of an American Spitfire pilot and legendary POW escaper

Just a short precis of other books

Appears to me it's just extracted certain parts from a number of escapes as detailed by other authors. Gives little insight into escape backgrounds nor painstaking build up to the escapes. I suppose it might whet your appetite to buy a book that goes through an individual escape in detail e.g. Colditz Castle.

Interesting Account of True Life Escape Bids

Readers would know by now that I am a major World War II buff. As a child I was fascinated by the subject and since then have devoured almost every book I could lay my hands on, even though now those days seem so far away with over 6o years or more since the German surrender. An interesting aspect of these war stories were the attempts to escape from captivity by the Allied prisoners of war (POWs) .
Several legends have grown out of these escape attempts. Many tried to escape and only a very few succeeded. Freya Hardy's book, " Great Escapes of World War II: Tom Dick and Harry to Stalag to Colditz" speaks of different escape bids including some of the more famous ones like Airey Neave's amazing escape from Colditz which was supposed to be the toughest POW camp of all time.

I read the Kindle version and id there was any disappointment it was at the length of the book which is 58 pages which one could read in a jiffy. This seems to be the condensed version of a bigger book perhaps.

Despite the limitations of length, the author was able to describe the conditions in the POW camps and how some people were resigned to accept their fate and hang on till they were rescued while others showed more spirit and initiative believing that it was their duty to try to escape and harass their captors in as many ways as they possibly could. Some of the stories describe the ingenuity of the human mind and how the prisoners succeeded in making fake uniforms, documents and the like despite all the constraints they faced.

Recommended if you like World War stories, as you will forgive the author the short length and reminiscence instead on the stories of some very brave men who continued to fight the War in their own ways despite the hardships of being in captivity.

Structure not clear, but lots of instructor materials

My perspective is as a reader who teaches a course in English-language contract-drafting in the law section of a Japanese university, and who's been a US transactional practitioner for nearly 30 years. There are a number of nice things about this book, including that the book's author (SP) is obviously a long-term practitioner herself. She provides a selection of transaction scenarios likely to appeal to students, involving artists, bands, movies, toy inventors, etc. An appendix includes some good advice for interviewing clients. There's also an amusing "dictionary of negotiating and drafting slang" that reminds us that terms like "no-brainer" and "deal-breaker" might not have intuitively obvious meanings (though I think "megillah" might be differently understood in NYC or L.A.).

While the book itself omits any mention of instructor's materials, I learned about their existence from the publisher's website. The publisher graciously provided a link and a password after I'd emailed them from my university account. These materials are quite generous, ranging from confidential instructions to the parties for negotiation exercises, to various types of error-spotting exercises, general contract drafting skill exams, and a clever "imagine-a-deal" exercise that I think would be popular in my classroom.

However, a few aspects of the book aren't instructor-friendly. There isn't any index. There's an introduction for students, but none for instructors. And neither the book nor the online teacher's materials provide any guidance on how the various "sequences" of scenarios and exercises are to be used: seriatim, in the alternative, or some other way. This lack of guidance is especially disconcerting because there's a lot of highly obvious repetition in the material, from one "sequence" to the next. E.g., a paragraph that begins "3. The naked drafter rules the world. No, I am not advocating that you draft in the nude. ..." appears both @161 and @ 353. In fact, the surrounding two pages are virtually exactly the same, except that some substitutions have been made for the names or roles of the parties. I think students would be put off by reading such cute stuff more than once, but the book doesn't tell an instructor how to avoid this. Many other features of the book are also repeated from one scenario to the next, including checklists that could have been relegated to an Appendix.

Substantively, I had some issues too, though maybe a couple of these reflect regional differences between the US Midwest, where SP practiced, and the West Coast, where I spent the lion's share of my career to date.
@ The book includes some sample memoranda from associates that are far too wordy; they wouldn't be suitable role models in any of the contexts in which I've practiced. In fact, they're the kinds of memos I wrote as a 1st-year associate -- and caught heck for. (At one of the Silicon Valley-based global manufacturers where I later worked, senior executives, including the General Counsel, went so far as to demand memos of no longer than 1 page.)
@ Some of the scenarios include "transcripts" of meetings with clients, presented as background documents -- but I've never encountered such a luxury (or constraint) during my practice. It might be better to present these conversations simply as dramatic dialogues, instead of leading students to expect that transcripts are a norm.
@ The discussions of Non-Dislcosure Agreements refer to the "term" of the NDA, without making it clear that there are at least two different time frames to be negotiated in any NDA, which students need to learn to distinguish well. Many tactical issues relating to the use of NDAs go unmentioned -- e.g., the book takes it for granted that an NDA will be mutual. (Again, my expectations are set by Silicon Valley practice, e.g. tech development.)
@ The book encourages, in more than one scenario, the use of a term sheet PLUS a non-binding, executed letter of intent. Personally, I think it's a better practice to stick with just an unsigned term sheet if the parties won't need to perform any obligations prior to execution of a definitive agreement, and to use an executed LOI only when one or more parties need to be bound in the interim (e.g. no-shop or due diligence obligations during certain M&A negotiations). I spend close to 2 hours in my course giving students practice in distinguishing between when to use term sheets and LOIs.
@ A few exercises mention a "negotiation prep sheet," where the client's position is to be filled in upon further instructions from the instructor, but the book does not seem to teach about BATNAs.
@ The book has a bias toward "Plain English" drafting, which not all practitioners will share -- even those who believe that contracts should be intelligible to non-lawyer clients. Cf. the more intermediate position of "standard English" advocated by Kenneth Adams in his Manual of Style for Contract Drafting 2nd (ABA 2008). Also, the book anticipates that even if two sides to a deal start out with different styles, they will be able to converge on Plain English. It ignores the reality that sometimes one has to tolerate a bit of legalese because of power differentials, e.g., where the lawyer who wrote it represents your client's humongous customer, or else simply to save the other side's face.

I've subtracted one star in the aggregate for the unclear structure and for these substantive issues. I hope that most of these matters will be remedied or clarified in a future edition.

The Complete Idiots Guide To The Perfect Resume, 5th Ed

I liked this book. This is a no non-sense approach to creating several types of resume's. The instruction is very clear and understandable with many examples of many different career types (engineers, bankers, insurance, teaching, etc.) I used the approaches (which I though were silly at first) and was amazed at the almost immediate response with calls for interviews. (I am also now employed) This book answered the many questions I had concerning what should and should not be included in the resume (kind of like the author has been asked these questions before). I totally recommend this book for the job seeker.

Do it this way or just blend into the crowd.

I have been using this book as a guide for years. The author's approach to this horribly tedious and annoying task actually gives you hope that you will accomplish something useful. The main idea is to not make your resume look like every other resume in the universe. Every other tutorial about writing up your resume recommends the same crappy methods and you end up with a repulsive list of the some old thing that crosses the desk of every hiring authority; and you don't want that.

Considering how little this book can cost you, you'll be highly rewarded for giving it a try. Since I found it many years ago, I haven't bothered to look elsewhere.

This is a great book. I found it at the Monster.com website and checked it out from my library. I liked it so much that I decided to buy it. I received the book in less than a week although the scheduled delivery time could have been as late as mid-April. I would definitely buy from this seller again. They are fast and reliable.
