Investigating an Old Death

Postern of Fate

Tommy and Tuppence retired to an old house in the country. They brought their books and bought some left behind by the previous owner. Do they have enough shelf space? One book has letters underlined to create a message (Chapter 2). Tuppence investigates the name of Mary Jordan. The young boy that owned this book died at age fourteen. [There is a lot of conversation, as if the author was paid by the word and dragged out the story; the pacing is slow.] ‘Book Two’ continues the story. Tuppence continues to question old people about the past. Foxglove leaves can be mistaken for spinach with deadly results. Tommy talks to old friends and hears a story about the place (Chapter 12).

Were there hidden letters or papers? Tommy meets Mr. Robinson who tells him a surprising fact about Mary Jordan (Chapter 13)! Tommy tells Tuppence the news (Chapter 15). If the family were mildly poisoned there would be little suspicion if only Mary Jordan died. Was the accident something else? Tuppence visits old Mrs. Griffin to learn about past people (Chapter 16). They search the inside of an old toy horse (Chapter 18). A picture album has a photo of Mary Jordan. Tommy visits Colonel Pikeaway who talks about the past and the influence of money (Chapter 19). He warns them to take care of what they eat or drink, and who wants to be their friend. Tuppence finds the body of old Isaac (Chapter 20). The Inquest says murder (Chapter 21)!

Some children visit Tuppence (Chapter 23). They will accompany her to the old-age home where she talks to some people. While visiting the garden they hear two shots, Tuppence is wounded (Chapter 24)! Tommy called the police (Chapter 25). Colonel Pikeaway heard all the news. Tommy visits Colonel Pikeaway, who advises him to stay close to home. Miss Mullins visits and offers to work in the garden (Chapter 27). She returns the next day, and is seen tampering with Tuppence’s coffee (Chapter 29). Their daughter Deborah arrives with her children (Chapter 30). Tommy and Tuppence visit Mr. Robinson, Mr. Crispin and Colonel Pikeaway are there (Chapter 31). [The solution doesn’t seem credible to me, it reeks of paranoia - the most esteemed person is the traitor!]

Agatha Christie is one of the best known and most widely read writers of all time. This 1973 mystery novel has 31 chapters and more pages than other stories. It is probably the worst of the series; it is also the last. It runs on too long and should have been shorter.

About the Author
Casey Kelly, the writer of several Grammy-nominated songs, lives in Nashville, Tennessee. His many hits include #1's: Kenny Rogers & Dottie West's "Anyone Who Isn't Me Tonight," Tanya Tucker's "Soon" and George Strait's country music standard, "The Cowboy Rides Away."  He works as a session player and singer and performs in Clubs and Concerts for audiences throughout the US and Europe.  A frequent mentor, panelist and workshop contributor, Casey is a member of ASCAP,  NSAI and he is currently a Songwriters Guild of America Board of Councilors member, and Vice President.  The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Art of Songwriting is his first published book.

Keeps you guessing!

Let me begin by saying that crime novels are not typically my genre, but I am happy to report that I enjoyed this book and I can absolutely recommend it, whether crime is your jam or not! Brown accomplishes the tricky feat of creating a world that is both well-researched AND human. In fact, the strong relationships in this book are one of its key strengths. The main character's adventures with his hacker-ish sister and his co-ed chasing forensics assistant provide both comedic relief from an otherwise dark story line as well as background information that helps us understand Connor better. The most interesting part of the story for me was Connor's growing involvement with the complex Tiffan family, a group that contains the murderer he is seeking as well as the woman he's falling for. Brown also has an excellent knack for weaving important details into his storyline without hitting you over the head with them. When pivotal events happen in the plot, you can trace their origins subtly through the preceding chapters. I truly had no idea who the murderer was until it was officially revealed, which is a credit to Brown. He keeps you guessing!

I do have a few critiques which kept me from giving that 5th star. I agree with other reviewers that parts of this book are overwritten. Brown could probably have shaved 25% of his text away and made it twice as suspenseful. Most of those omissions could come from Brown's pop culture references. There are a LOT of them and they distract from the story more than they help tell it. For me, there is also something off about Connor as he probably should be and Connor as he is. We are told that Connor is an Iraq vet who lost the woman he loved in a tragic shoot em up incident. We are also told that he then became a balls to the walls prosecutor in the DC area and was later dismissed for some unexplained offense. But the Connor who appears in the pages of this story sometimes seems more like a goofy side kick than a trained killer/heartbroken lover/voracious lawyer. That's not to say that Connor needs to be a one dimensional stock character, but we have to be able to envision him in the high stakes combat/romantic/legal situations he claims to have survived, which I couldn't always do. My guess is that Brown will be bringing Connor back again in future books and I'm sure that, as HIS relationship with the main character deepens, so will his ability to write him for us.

Kept me on the edge of my seat!

Bottom Line, I recommend it. A friend bugged me into reading it, and I ending up loving the book. The story was easy to read and follow, yet also kept me guessing, suspenseful, and funny. It was touching at the end, but don't want to give away how. The characters are mostly great (didn't care for Lauren but I liked the goofy Forensics friend Alec enough to make up for it) and a couple of the screwed up ones felt familiar, like I've met (or been related to) people like these myself. Only nit-pick: very long! Worth it, though. Hope to see more from him!

Two books on Dr Faustus for the price of one!

It is just so convenient to have both the 1604 A-text of Marlowe's Dr.Faustus bound with The English Faust Book. It is in that sense an ideal undergraduate text enabling students to make proper comparisons with a source and thereby to see how Marlowe has rendered the narrative into dramatic form. And anyway the Faust Book is great fun in itself.
The editorial material, introduction and notes are also thorough and valuable though in part they might be said to favour someone who has existing knowledge of other editions and writings on Marlowe.
And finally, for price, it is perfectly accessible.
So thank you to David Wootton and the Hackett Publishing Company for providing such usable materials.

How can one not give 5 stars to Marlowe's classic play?
But what makes this edition great is the inclusion of the English Faust Book; an English version of the prose German account of the Faust legend. Here you will find many more details of the story that Marlowe leaves out. Neat grisly stuff!

Excellent price, helpful footnotes, detailed introduction, and the inclusion of the English Faust Book make this a great choice for college students working on the Faust myth or Christopher Marlowe's works.

If you're reading it for the Faust tale, be sure to read Goethe's for comparison. Then pick up Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus : The Life of the German Composer Adrian Leverkuhn As Told by a Friend.
