"Ready?" She glanced at him. He looked rugged, sexy, and unhurried. It was an effort for her to take her eyes off him and focus on the road ahead. As they set off, he seemed to be in a great mood.

"I'm looking forward to this, Nadine. I have to admit."

She could feel him looking at her from the side and she didn't like this disadvantage one bit. She would have to keep her eyes on the road ahead yet he would be free to look at her. He was doing so already. She hoped the new Estee Lauder eye wrinkle cream would work its magic. She also thanked her lucky stars that he was getting her best side profile.
It was almost a two-hour drive to the Stormont and she didn't plan to stop off anywhere for a break. She wanted to be there for five, which would give them an hour or more before meeting everyone for introductions in the lounge for cocktails.

"So tell me again, why is this a very important event for you?" He looked at her for the longest time. "Who is it that I need to impress?"
She laughed out loud at this, and then looked at him. His now bright blue eyes pierced through her. Her eyes fell to his strong jawline before she reminded herself to keep her eyes on the road.

"You don't need to impress anyone. I do. You just need to look good. We're supposed to be in a balanced, loving, and healthy relationship."

"Is that so?" He paused thoughtfully. "We'll need to get some chemistry going then." He placed his arm lazily on the car door.
Nadine carried on, wondering which facts he needed to be most aware of. "Sandra Donnelly is my boss. She's a coldhearted, unpleasant woman--"

Before she could finish, Ethan interrupted her. "Basically, she's a bitch."

"Yes. You could say that."

"Older than you and worried that you're better?" he asked nonchalantly.

"Perhaps. She's been dumping a lot of her work on me, ever since I got this promotion."

"So what are you now? What's your job title?"

"My title?" She glanced at him, wondering why he needed to know every little detail.

"You're more than a secretary, am I right?"

"I'm an executive creative director."

Ethan whistled. "Whoa! I'm with the head honcho?"

She turned to him and saw that he didn't seem all that surprised, even though he made out he was.

"Sandra is the head honcho above me, and the guy we're both out to impress is Michael Zimmerman. He's the one who owns the company."

"I had you figured for a smart woman right from the beginning, Nadine. It doesn't surprise me one bit that you are where you are. What does surprise me is that you're still single."

He brought the conversation around to that whole relationship topic again.
What should she tell him, that she had always focused on her career? That she had met and dated someone who she thought was the one but she broke off the engagement because she woke up one day and realized he wasn't? That since then she had dedicated herself to working her way up the career ladder and that men and children were the last thing on her mind?

"Ethan, I don't have time for relationships. That's why I hired you to pretend to be my boyfriend." Wanting to put an end to that line of questioning, she closed her lips firmly together.

"You know, you shouldn't purse your lips together like that. It'll make your nasolabial folds more pronounced."

"You're not gay, are you?" she shot back. He was jesting with her but he had picked something that was a sensitive topic for her. It annoyed her that he was picking on her. Normally she wouldn't have given a hoot. But this was Ethan, and she wanted to know that he found her appealing.

"A hot-blooded man like me? You're kidding me, right?"

Unable to find more words to shoot at him, she shot him a dirty look instead.
"Are you always so nice to the women you wine and dine?" she asked finally.

"I can't tell you about the women I wine and dine. That's strictly top secret information, I'm afraid."

For a minute she believed him, until he burst out laughing at her naiveté.

Writer has potential. A good editor will help.

This book was a quick read. I didn't get bored part of the way through and I did connect with the characters. Connecting with characters is always the most important aspect of a good book in my opinion. However, there were some issues that did bother me while reading through the book.

1. The characters are living in San Francisco. As far as I can tell from their background, these people are American. So why am I seeing British vocab in the book? American people do not ring people, they call people. They have cookies, not biscuit and I have never heard an American say "whilst." This was something that brought me out of the story when I noticed those inconsistencies. If you are writing characters in America,use the American vocab.

2. There were errors with word usage as well as sentences that didn't make sense at all.

3. The ending was too abrupt. It tied up neatly but it didn't feel right because I wanted to know more. A quick 6 months down the road blurb would have done wonders to complete the story.

A good editor would be able to note all of these issues and help the author to write some great stories.

Oh, dear...

I'm a bit surprised this isn't a first effort; yet, according to another reviewer, the writer has previous works. While the premise is good, the writing is littered with basic errors that make it very difficult to immerse yourself in the storyline. At the start of the story, it's quite apparent the main character's sister was originally called 'Amy', but the writer then gave that name to her best friend and called her 'Kiera', instead. No biggie, except she hasn't made the switch complete, so that sometimes you have 'Kiera' interacting with herself or in a place she couldn't possibly be, given previous information, because it's meant to be Amy. Annoying.

The worst thing about this story, however, is that the writer commits a very basic error of technique in that she switches between points of view as the main characters are interacting. Very confusing and a very novice mistake. Add in the various commas that are sometimes ill-placed and, for me, it was just too distracting. I couldn't venture beyond the fourth chapter.

I recommend a good editor provide assistance, post-haste, before the author tries to charge for this one.

Fun, quick read

The book was fun to read, but there is an abundance of spelling and grammatical errors. Sometimes this made it extremely difficult to maintain a good pace to read by. There are words missing in some sentences, leaving the reader to guess what the author is trying to convey. These are simple fixes that should have been caught by the editor and turned me off a bit.

Great guide on how you can become happy

We have to keep growing and changing to avoid becoming complacent and stifling our own creativity. I particularly liked Sharron's take on writing your own obituary while you're still alive to dig deep and ask yourself what you would like to be remembered for? She points out that such a simple step eliminates your trivial concerns and puts what really matters in sharp focus. She also says that we all interpret the world based on the state of our minds. If one is happy then the world is a friendly place. However, when one feels miserable the world then may be interpreted as a hostile place. This book contains several useful life tips and even though the title says its a guide for women, I believe it is applicable to men too. Highly recommended.

Don't Take it Personally!

In spite of this book being targeted at women, I think it works just as well for us men. I'm a 56 year old man and found much of what is in this book quite inspiring and very relevant to me. I often take things much too personally and I've now been reminded that it isn't helpful. I also like the idea of "happiness existing only in acceptance" and that is mostly about learning to live in the "now". I have come across many of ideas in this book before, but that doesn't mean that I have been comprehensively actioning them; although I accept the worth of many of these ideas, I find it difficult to live them and for that reason I found this book was a very useful reminder of how I could make a difference in my life. It is well written too.

A Very Well Written 'Self Help' Guide!

Actually to refer to this book as a guide probably doesn't do it justice...it's so much more in depth than any guide! The author is both articulate and insightful and 'tells it how it is'. Right up front she points out that only we can change ourselves and challenges us to take action.

I am familiar with the concept of mindfulness, but Shannon Jane describes it in such a way that a person can not only understand it better but also apply it to their daily lives. Despite the fact that I have read many so called 'self help' books, I had many 'aha' moments while reading this one, and found that the explanations about our misguided beliefs about how much control we think we have on situations were particularly enlightening.

In additon to guiding us on our journey to happiness with the various tips that she highlights by 'opening our eyes' to numerous truths that we may not have made the connection with on our own, the author also provides many practical exercises that we can apply in order to put her suggestions into action.

My favorite 'light bulb moment' came from the following quote from the book... "happiness has no meaning if you have no sadness and unhappiness to compare it with" ...it sums up what I got from this book....don't dwell on the sad, use it to find the happy! An excellent read that will help you if you're willing to let it!

About the Author
James Willard Schultz (Apikuni), wrote forty-four books, including "Blackfeet and Buffalo" and "Blackfeet Tales from Apikuni's World", both published by the University of Oklahoma Press.

George Bird Grinnell was a man of diverse talents editor, author, traveler, and scientist. Born in 1849, he became, by turn of the century, one of the best-known and most popular interpreters of the American Indian.

Well worth the read

This is an excellent, first hand account of the major transformation of Plains Indian culture that occured during the nearly complete extermination of the buffalo which was so central to their life. It starts with the buffalo in plenty and ends with reservation life. This is a bittersweet book. Schultz marries into a band of the Piegan branch of the Blackfoot confederacy. But although he lives among them, and loves them and their lifestyle, he never completes his assimilation. This is evident when he writes with almost distant amusement of some of their religious beliefs. Adding to this is the problem that while he loves the life of the buffalo days and deeply laments their end, his occupation as a trader in buffalo robes is contributing to the end of the very thing he loves. His description of the post-buffalo, early reservation life is the most distressing, complete with corrupt reservation Agents, and often rascist newcomers.
His stories are not all downers though. His writing is a very detailed, intimate, and at times humorous description of the life and adventures of himself and those around him. I've loaned my book to a number of people and they all have liked it. If you read this and like it too, you'll be glad to know he wrote a whole series of books of his life in early Montana, and of the lives of prominent people he knew. I've read many, but not all of them, and I prize every one.

Outstanding account of life on the Plains in the late 1800's. Schultz was an outstanding storyteller who beautifully depicted the Blackfeet people. This is the real life Dances with Wolves. This and other works by Shcultz were originally published in Field and Stream magazine. His stories helped gain much needed aid for the Blackfeet and helped to establish Glacier National Park. Well worth your time!

Absolutely captivating. Enrapturing.

I read "My Life As An Indian" when I was thirteen. It was the biggest book I'd ever read, and I re-read so many times that my name filled the entire library card. The librarian at Southeast Kentucky's Cumberland High School finally gave me the tattered book. It's the most complete and believable look ever at the daily life of American Plains Indians in the 1800's--how they lived, how they loved, what they admired and what they were afraid of, how they fought, what they believed in and respected, and what they worshipped. And most of all it's a real-life experience with them and the one thing they loved most: their land. Written by a white man with an Indian's perspective.
